Lost Network Connectivity after Update

Norton Internet Security (2011) has been working fine until it would not start up at all. I'd double-click the desktop icon, but nothing would happen. I did this several times which brought up a Norton's One Button Service web page. I clicked through, followed the instructions, rebooted, found that the problem continued, downloaded and used the Norton Application Removal tool, had to remove Norton Utilities, and downloaded a replacement Internet Security application.

After this process was completed the Norton Internet Security app still does not work and now I have no Web access through applications.

My Dell M1330 laptop has been working fine. I have a choice of using an Ethernet connector (RJ-45) or wireless connection. Each are with different carriers. I use the same ethernet connection for my desktop where Internet access continues to be no problem (so the problem is not external to the laptop).

The access lights on the RJ-45 port are both functioning and I am able to ping addresses. However, I am unable to get Internet connectivity with Firefox, IE8, Norton Antivirus, etc.

I booted from a Norton emergency bootup disk and ran the antivirus from there against definitions only a month old and no viruses were detected.

I checked the Device Manager and the Broadcom and Wireless devices show that they are working - I did delete a lone Microsoft 6to4 device that was showing an exclamation mark. However I am not running IV6.

I reset the the Microsoft Firewall and it appears to be working nominally.

Everything was working fine until a reboot after downloading software from Symantec.

This appears to be a software issue as the hardware seems to be working but the higher level software access to the adapters seems to be blocked. Since both the ethernet and wireless was working and access to both stopped, I did not want to mess with the drivers and possibly introduce more problems.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Moving on with the analysis and testing.

I restored the system to a date earlier than the last Microsoft Tuesday Special - I now have my Internet connectivity back. So that problem appears to be some conflict with the Microsoft patches.

However, the Norton Internet Security application remains dead. Now after double-clicking the icon several times, I am not getting the One Button Support like I got before. Of course I also lost the Norton Utilities as I had to remove that application before I ran the Norton Application Removal tool - so now I don't have either application.

Should I go ahead and simply uninstall the application and reinstall? Are there some registry locations that I can check or update to get the app working?

Hi mike49,

System Restore tends to break Norton anyway, so I would suggest going ahead with an uninstall / reinstall of Norton.  I am not so sure that the issue has anything to do with any Microsoft patches, however.  There were just one or two updates released last time and there have been no other reports of problems associated with them.  Perhaps it is something else that changed on your system since Patch Tuesday.
