I am having some problems with my computer that seem to be related to my Norton Internet Security package. When connected to the internet, response to commands slows down to an unbearable crawl – sometimes to a complete stop that can only be resolved by a re-boot. The Windows Task Manager indicates that a great deal of my resources are being used by programs identified as LuCallBackProxy.exe and/or CCSVCHST.exe, two programs that are apparently related to Norton Internet Security. It appears that these programs are using up so many of my resources that nothing else can work.
A few days ago I purchased Norton Utilities on the advertised promise that it allows one to “tune-up, maintain and adjust your PC to return it to its original out-of-the-box performance.” I figured that if it was NIS that was causing my problems, then NU should be able to fix them. No improvement after running all of the NU programs and a Windows disk defrag.
Can anybody provide some help that a simple user such as myself can understand?
Here’s the info on my system and software: Gateway NX250X, Pentium M 1.73 Ghz, 504 MB Ram XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 Norton Internet Security 15.0.0.60, Family SKU 10433531, Media SKU 12608445. Norton Utilities 14.0.0.318, Engine 3.0.0.850, Framework 3.0.0.700
Part of your problem is that you are using NIS 2008 which utilizes a separate Live Update component to provide your product with the latest definition and signature updates. This is a slower, more resource consuming function than in the current product line.
NIS 2010 utilizes a different method which eliminates this excessive use of system resources. With a valid subscription, you are eligible for a free update to this new and improved security program.
If your NIS 2008 is an OEM version or supplied through your ISP, you may not be eligible.
Let us know more details about your NIS 2008 product.
Thanks for the info, Phil. I updated to NIS 2010 and things are working much better. Hopefully it sticks. Is it possible that Norton doesn't know about this problem with NIS 2008? You'd think if they did, they would advise their subscribers. For those of us that use a computer in the same manner we use a lawnmower (a powerful tool deserving of regular maintenance but nothing that inspires affection or a desire to learn the minutia of its inner workings) the type of problems I encountered are extraordinarily frustrating. Is there a simple way for me to advise Norton of this situation so they can save other subscribers from the kind of frustration I experienced?

You just did! But I will be sure to pass along your comments.
One last thought. Since you have installed NIS 2010, Live Update is no longer required. Please check in Add-Remove Programs and be sure that entry along with Live Update Notifier is no longer present. If they are, you can safely uninstall them from there.
Thanks again, Phil. My computer is performing quite well since the update. And it looks like the auto-install of NIS 2010 automatically expunged the Live Update program, as it is not within the population of programs on my "Add-Remove Programs" list.
