MAC 10.13 (High Sierra) and High CPU usage

After updating my MacBook to OS 10.13 the CPU usage is off the chart and creating high heat issues due to increased CPU percentage. Running Norton version 7.5.

Any suggestions appreciated.

All: Check your systems for a passwordless ROOT account. There is a serious exploit in high sierra that creates these accounts as discussed here: http://mashable.com/2017/11/28/macos-high-sierra-security-flaw/#Dkuh6en2UgqX

Note: there is also a way to prevent those accounts from being created in the article as well. I don't know if this could be the root of some High Sierra issues being seen but certainly deserves the investigating.

I too am having this issue. The mac keeps shutting down possibly from the cpu s being maxed out for a long time. I'm running the latest versions of Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.1 and NS 7.6 build 113.  It looks like the only choice at this point is to remove NS until a solution is found. Looking for the RemoveSymanticMacFiles path now.

Glad to have assisted and sorry we couldn't find an answer for you. My final suggestion is contacting Apple support. The Norton Security update thread doesn't address the issue you are having as being a part of any changes/bug fixes. Although it has been reported: https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-update-announcements/norton-security-76-mac-now-available

That being said I stand by my assessment that the new APFS file system is cause of the Symquald CPU over run issue you are seeing. The new OS is reported as having issues that have not yet been addressed with SSD drives and TRIM as well. Still BETA as far as I am concerned and not ready for prime time.

Hi.
Even with version 7.6 of NS the "Symquald" continues to occupy drastically the CPU when the machine starts.
I must be the only NS user on the Mac facing this problem.
I'm tired of testing. I will discuss the use of other security software.
Even without solving the problem, I appreciate the response from here.
Thank you.

All: Norton Security for MAC has a new version 7.6 : https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-security-76-mac-now-available

Please update and recheck your issues if you'd be so kind.

In the last two days Symquald has gone to normal, using between 1% and 5% when starting the machine.
I think some update fixed the problem. I will accompany your operation for a few more days.
Thank you.

JAMC I'm in reversal with the version of your OS as 10.13.1 was an "update" fixing the WPA vulnerability and other small bugs. Not a BETA. Many apologies. https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/macos-10-13/

Concerning your SSD drive, do you have TRIM enabled? Disable it if it is enabled and recheck for your issue.

Thanks for the feedback.
But I do not fit into any of these cases.
I'm running the final version 10.13.1 and not BETA (https://support.apple.com/macos or http://www.iclarified.com/63191/apple-releases-macos-high-sierra-10131 -download).
Also I'm not using APFS but rather the Extended (HFS +). APFS is recommended for pure SSDs, I use a Fusion Drive (HD + SSD).
I tested another Antivirus and it did not show this behavior, but I would like to continue with NS.
I hope that in an upcoming update of NS the problem will be solved.

Thanks.

JAMC From what I am reading MAC OS 10.13.1 is indeed still BETA and was released to developers on 26 October and a public BETA is also available. I believe you are indeed running a BETA public release since it can be obtained through regular software update channels. Version 10.13 was released to the public a month earlier. https://www.macrumors.com/2017/10/26/apple-seeds-macos-high-sierra-10-13-1-beta-5/

The new APFS file system may be the cause of the Symquald CPU over run issue you are seeing. Compatibility with Norton may be the end results. Although current charts show Norton is compatible.

No. Now I'm running the final version 10.13.1.
Previously, I was also running the final version 10.13.
I formatted and did a clean installation of Mac OS and after installing NS, usually when I boot the system, the "Symquald" occupies the CPU.
I have found that if I extract a sample, through the activity monitor, it unlocks the CPU and after some time closes.
I will continue to seek a solution.
Thank you.

JAMC Are you running a BETA release of the MAC OS? Such as 10.13.x

Hi.
I have the same problem.
I've completely removed (following these steps), restarted and reinstalled it twice. I also restored my mac from a backup, and I installed NS again and the problem continues.
It usually occurs when I start the machine, the "symqualid" takes up the processor drastically and only stop when I force it to shut down.
I use Norton version 7.5 on OS 10.13.
Any other suggestions?

Hello Cliff. Checking to see if you have removed and reinstalled your product. And what those results were.

Cheers

Cliff Granger Remove and reinstall your product following these instructions. Once removal is done please remember to reboot prior to reinstalling. Then, run live updates at least twice. Both times until no other updates are available rebooting each time: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

Hello Cliff. The post tags state this as related to Norton Core. Could you please elaborate for us? Thanks in advance.
