Mac OS Big Sur - Norton Firewall Blocks everything

*** REMOVE NORTON 360 for MAC Big Sur ***

I have tried every setting combination there is and still NO fix to this problem!

My solution is to fully remove Norton 360 from the Mac and seek either another anti-virus product or try again in a month (using Mac firewall) to see if Norton has solved this problem.

UNFORTUNATELY I have a long term Norton subscription which has some time to run, so hopefully Norton fixes this very soon.

Best of luck whichever way you decide to move.

Hello,

I finally upgraded to 8.6.1 and the problem is still there. Anyone having any success? How or where can I apply for a reduction in my renewal bill as so far I have paid for 2 months of service in which the tool may/may not be working. Totally unacceptable and beyond a joke. My works machine using Sophos was fixed after about 3 weeks of Big Sur being released. Come on Norton fix the dam problem or start giving us our money back.

Chris

Well since its been like this for months and Norton just keep fobbing people off and stalling by asking for a never ending amount of log files, I think I'll forgo my last 3 days and remove Norton and install my new Anti Virus software.

Completely unacceptable service and behaviour from Norton. Most of us pay for our subscription yearly in advance and it's been next to useless for months. Was I offered a refund for this, or an extension of services until the issues are resolved?? NO!!! Nothing but corporate greed. Their attitude is that they already have your money, so what are you gonna do?

Well Norton, you have lost another customer and I hope you continue to lose more until you realise who pays you salary and start treating customers properly. Absolutely disgusted. Goodbye.

A couple of days ago, I have given up and uninstalled Norton. I decided that after having been a loyal customer of Norton for more than 10 years and having almost a year troubles with MacOS and Norton (already had issues under Catalina with Norton and Time Machine), it is time to check out another product. I am now a customer of another Anti-Virus (BS). No issues at all with Big Sur (so far).

It appears that Norton is working on a fix.  See the discussion in this thread:

https://community.norton.com/en/forums/macos-big-sur-network-protection-hangs-traffic

Hopefully 8.6.2 will fix it; 8.6.1 didn't address these issues...at least for me.

Have given up with Norton 360 Mac and Parallels shared network mode and operate Parallels in bridged mode.

Still have Norton running on the Mac side.

I guess one day the Parallels and Norton team might sort out the issues.

I seemed to be consumed by thissmiley

I posted this on the Parallels Forum today.

-------

Update - I have been focussing on settings in Norton 360 having followed/ contributing dialog on a similar Norton Forum.
I have made the following settings in Norton 360 Mac which (so far) have allowed me to use Parallels Shared Networking without anymore heavy CPU loading evident by "prl_naptd" and "prl_disp_service" - currently 0 to 0.1% - the added new N360 settings are:

1) Firewall > Connection Blocking > Settings > Editing (Trusted Network) > Zones > Trust Zone (allowed addresses) > + (or add IP address) - I added
both my Routers full range of local area IP addresses plus the Parallels virtual subnet range of IP addresses (10.211.55.1 to 10.211.55.255)
2) Firewall > Vulnerability Protection > Settings > Exclusions > Add > All IP addresses on network

NOTE - You have to consider security settings for your own situation - the above are my personal settings only.
If you are not sure or get stuck use the online Norton support methods to chat with one of their technicians.

I did this and it seemed to reduce the CPU usage for my setup ... but early days ... will keep this thread updated over time.

Norton 360 vulnerability protection is designed to recognise the Firewall trusted network according to the support docs.

So this still points to an incorrect Firewall setup or try this and see what happens in your case:

Firewall > Vulnerability Protection > Settings > Exclusions > Add > All computers on my current network > EABLE Vulnerability Protection

Let us know the outcome.

I had the same problem. The solution turned out to be the vulnerability protection, not the firewall. Turn it off and airplay works again.

Security White Paper - Parallels

Dispatcher Service The Dispatcher is a management component of Parallels Desktop. It runs as a system service (daemon) and communicates with the GUI app and the VM app through a Unix domain (IPC) socket. The Dispatcher also facilitates establishing a direct connection between the GUI and the VM app through the Unix domain socket.

An update.  Tried PeterCH's suggestion re: adding my network's ip addresses so that they are excluded from connection blocking but that didn't work either.  At this point I've turned off Norton 360 firewell on my Macbook (still on for Win 10 running under Fusion) and turned on the Mac's own firewall.  (I tried turning off just Connection Blocking however that didn't work so also turned off Vulnerability Protection and Location Awareness.)

Also escalated the issue with Norton support (referenced both this tread and another one) and am awaiting a call back.

This is ridiculous.  Our subscription is up in April and now considering alternatives if this isn't addressed soon.

I recently updated to macOS big sur 11.1 from macOS Catalina on a Mid-2017 Macbook Pro 15-inch. Norton 360 caused google chrome and safari to stop working. It also blocked me from sharing files between other computers on my network (including my Windows 10 virtual machine using Parallels desktop), even after allowing connections. Disabling the Norton Firewall didn't help. I then completely uninstalled Norton 360 and then reinstalled but that also didn't help. So I uninstalled Norton on mac and I will consider reinstalling when the issue is fixed.

@PeterCH What is the typical Parallels subnet address range for mac? Or how would I find out what it is?

I also kept getting connection blocking alerts about Parallels Access Dispatcher Service. "The computer "eax80" is attempting to access Parallels Access Dispatcher Service on your computer. Do you want to allow this connection."

EAX80 is my WiFi mesh extender.

Just happened again this morning.  I'm posting this from Win 10 running  on Fusion.  I also have Norton 360 (for Windows) running on the Windows system.  Fusion is set in Bridged Networking...not an IT person so not sure why I can connect to the Internet and access the NAS drives through the VM but can't do so on the Mac.

Will now restart and see if @PeterCH's suggestion works.  Very very frustrating to say the least.

I've had this same exact issue with Big Sur and Norton 360.  I uninstalled it completely with help from Norton Support and reinstalled.  Worked fine for a few days and then ran into the same issues yesterday:

1.  lose connections to QNAP NAS drives but can access them through other computers and iPads

2.  inability to use Firefox and Safari browsers

Turning wi-fi on/off doesn't help.  Neither does using an Ethernet connection.

Two ways to temporarily resolve the issues;

1.  restart the MacBook Pro or

2.  disable Norton Firewall

I'll try to see if I can access the drives/Internet from my Fusion WIndows 10 OS on the MacBook.  Will also try the solution above re: ip addresses, although I'm not sure I like leaving the Firewall open like that.

Really expect Norton to address these issues.

Latest update.

I un-installed Norton 360 Mac then used the Norton Mac utility to completely remove any "left over" Norton files and settings.

Reloaded Norton 360 Mac then did the following.

I added my router IP address range to the Firewall settings.

1) Norton>Settings> Firewall>Connection Blocking>Connection blocking dialog box opens

2) Ensure "edit settings" has "trusted network" selected

3) Select "View>Zones>Trusted Zone>Add IP Address>, then using the "ALL IP addresses on a network" dialog box added my router IP range, e.g. 192.168.x.x to 192.168.x.xxx

Try this and see how Norton 360 on Mac Big Sur responds for you.

-----------------

If you are running Parallels for Desktop like me I went further.

a) Added the Parallels subnet address range as per above method fro Mac Norton 360.

b) Uninstalled "Parallels Tools" from Windows 10 - useful info from Parallels blog

c) Reloaded " Parallels Tools" from Parallels

Which "tamed" the high CPU use issue with Bug Sur/ Parallels Desktop 16 - but still some integration issues  I am still working on.

I am still working out how I can add a trusted IP range to my Norton 360 for WIN 10 though???

I have attached my log files.

At the moment I have the Norton Firewall Function disabled and collected Information in that configuration (NortonInfo_before_Issue_Firewall_Off.zip)

When I activate Norton Firewall it works for a while and than all network traffic is not working anymore!
This really means no network traffic at all - I even can not ping my computers own IP address anymore!
Only localhost can still be pinged - but the remaining network is completely down.
(NortonInfo_Issue.zip)

When I disable the firewall in this mode the network is still not working (NortonInfo_after_Issue_Firewall_off_still Issue.zip)

I have to restart the computer to solve the issue and then it is working with disabled Norton Firewall.

I hope this issue can be solved - otherwise I will uninstall Norton an look for another solution - even if I have just renewed a few weeks ago.

Best regards,
Johannes

I have attached the log files as instructed. At 09:22, I manually instructed TimeMachine to make a backup. TimeMachine then when to "Preparing Backup". After 3 minutes at 09:25, I got a message that the connection to my TimeMachine backup location was lost. I also lost all access to the internet and other network resources. The TimeMachine backup didn't even start, and was automatically cancelled. While running the Norton Diagnostic, at approximately 09:29, access to the internet became available again.

I repeated the issue again and ran the diagnostic again, this time as soon as internet access was lost. This time the diagnostic completed while internet access was still lost.

NortonInfo1.zip is the test where internet and network access came back while running the diagnostic.

NortonInfo2.zip is the test which completed while internet and network access was still being blocked. Internet access lost at approximately 09:36.

I have the same issue. Only thing that fixes it is to disable Norton from filtering network traffic on Network Settings. Thus, Norton is now useless on 2 Macs that I've already upgraded to Big Sur. Norton has 2 weeks to fix this before I will make the decision not to renew my subscription. Absolutely PATHETIC support from Norton! There answer to any issues is either try again later, reset to defaults, or uninstall/reinstall. Its certainly gone downhill in the years since I last subscribed.

Dear Norton Team,

I have the same issue like the one in the initial post.
I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 13" and if I enable the Norton 360 network service immediatelly all network traffic stops working.
I changed the confiuration like described above - did not help - just disabling the Norton 360 network service solves the issue.
But as also described above I now get the annoying messages all the time that my computer is not save.

Is there a solution available in the meantime?

Best regards
