Hello @Atul_Jain
Work accounts (often Norton Small Business or enterprise plans) have strict device limits. If your organization has reached its maximum number of allowed devices, activation will fail with a generic error.
Because this is a work account , standard Norton Support may have limited access to modify your license details. The error code likely indicates a server-side restriction managed by your employer. You will need to provide the specific error message text to your company’s IT helpdesk to verify if your user account is provisioned correctly for VPN usage on macOS.
For work accounts, this generic error often masks a subscription suspension . Norton automatically suspends VPN services if it detects “excessive usage” (e.g., leaving the VPN on 24/7 or downloading large torrents), which violates the Acceptable Use Policy for many business plans.
Log in to my.norton.com via a browser (with VPN off).
Check your Subscription Status . If it says “Suspended” or “Canceled,” you cannot reactivate it yourself.
Action : You must contact your IT Administrator or Norton Support to lift the suspension. They will see a specific flag on your account that you cannot see in the app.
Reset macOS Network & Keychain Permissions
If the license is active, the error may stem from macOS blocking the VPN tunnel creation due to permission conflicts, especially on macOS Sonoma, Sequoia, or Tahoe.
Remove Old Profiles : Go to System Settings > General > Profiles (if available) and delete any existing Norton profiles.
Reset Keychain : Sometimes the stored credentials corrupt. Open Keychain Access (via Spotlight), search for “Norton,” and delete any entries related to Norton VPN or Norton Secure VPN .
Re-authorize : Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > VPN & Filters . Toggle Norton OFF and then ON again to force a permission reset.
Try a Different Network
Norton’s security servers may block activation attempts from certain corporate firewalls or IP ranges if they detect unusual traffic patterns.
Disconnect from your Work Wi-Fi .
Connect to a mobile hotspot (phone) or a different home network.
Attempt the activation again. If it works, your corporate firewall is blocking the activation handshake, and your IT team needs to whitelist Norton’s activation servers.
If these steps fail, the error is almost certainly a backend account restriction managed by your employer’s specific Norton Small Business contract, requiring intervention from your IT helpdesk rather than technical troubleshooting on your Mac.
Yes, for work accounts , contacting your IT helpdesk is often the required next step when you encounter a generic “Something went wrong” error during VPN activation.
This is because work subscriptions (like Norton Small Business) are managed centrally by your organization, and standard users cannot resolve the following common blockers on their own:
License Eligibility & Suspension : Your organization’s admin can see if your specific user account has been flagged for excessive usage or if the VPN feature was explicitly excluded from your plan. If suspended, only they can request reinstatement from Norton.
Device Seat Limits : If your company has reached its maximum number of allowed devices, the system blocks new activations with a generic error. Your IT admin must either remove an old device from the portal or purchase additional seats.
Regional or Policy Restrictions : Some work contracts restrict VPN usage to specific countries or network types. Your helpdesk can verify if your current location or network violates these corporate policies.
While you should attempt the clean reinstall and macOS permission checks mentioned previously, if those fail, the “Something went wrong” message usually confirms a backend account restriction that only your administrator can fix.
Norton Support can assist with technical troubleshooting (e.g., reinstalling the app, checking server status, or verifying account login credentials), but they cannot override or modify work account restrictions managed by your employer.
Here is the division of responsibility:
What Norton Support CAN Do :
Confirm if the “Something went wrong” error is due to a global server outage or maintenance.
Verify if your account is technically active in their system.
Guide you through clean reinstallation steps specific to macOS.
Identify if the error code indicates a corrupted local profile .
What Norton Support CANNOT Do :
Increase Device Limits : They cannot add more “seats” to your company’s subscription; only the Account Owner (your IT admin) can purchase more or remove old devices.
Lift Suspensions : If your account was flagged for excessive usage (a common cause for this generic error on business plans), only the Account Owner can request reinstatement.
Modify Plan Features : They cannot add Secure VPN to your work plan if your employer purchased a tier that excludes it (e.g., basic Norton Small Business vs. Premium ).
