Magic Lantern

Does Symantec products allow a backdoor for Magic Lantern software, a key-logger issues by the FBI?

Hi Gary & welcome back!

"Ladies and Gentleman please fasten your seatbelts..."

This has been asked here before  -

So-called "Magic Lantern" software is fairy dust, and the hype and misrepresentation is over 12 years old.  Most sources I see quoting it (like "FBI confirmed....") comes from Wikipedia, which gets its input from public users, many without having any basis.

Yes, law enforcement does have at its disposal some cyber tools, and yes AV makers cooperate with law enforcement, but the companies' legal staffs ensure there exists a court order or proper legal authorization before facilitating any such intrusions, which would require cooperation of a lot of other parties (all of which would demand appropriate legal authorization).  Any suggestion that U.S. federal agencies go whimsical excursions into people's privacy is utter nonsense.  They couldn't patrol cyberspace even if they had the resources to do it.  Besides, for law-abiding citizens it's not a worry.

Kelly

Thanks Krusty :D

I read the other two threads and it seems the question was never answered. F-Secure did issue a statement that their product would detect all trojans and key loggers sine it would be unclear as to who was controlling them, FBI or otherwise.

Unfortunately the US does spy on its citizens and other as well without the blessing of a court order, it's called the "Patriot Act".

This is not Magic Lantern and come from a respected news source.

Here's another Wikipedia entry.  Scroll down to find "FBI cooperation".  It does not mention where this information came from though.
