I know this has been discussed in an earlier thread, however  I need to make sure I understand how this works as my trial will be over in 3 days & I will have to make a decision if I'm going to buy NAV 2009 or not!

My ISP requires a secure SSL conection  in order to work.  I know NAV 2009 will not scan my e-mail connection.  Am I still protected from a virus in a attachment if it downloaded?  Will the realtime scanner keep me protected from e-mail viruses?

Correct nothing to worry about NIS2009 will keep you safe

The NAV/NIS e-mail scanner will not intercept the infected attachment while it’s downloaded from the mail server because, as I and you know,  it unfortunately doesn’t monitor mail coming in from non-standard ports. However, Auto Protect will detect it at the moment when you attempt to open that attachment, if not before.

In N.I.S. 2008 at least anyway, it said "E-mail In-coming Scanning" and "E-mail Out-going Scanning"...

NIS 2009 works the same in this way

So, would I be right in saying that it does Scan In-coming and Out-going E-mail as well as Scanning Attchments and everything, and not as TomiRed said, i.e. just Scans Attachments and the like...?

This is to make this clear for other Users.  :)

Well that's what it does over here. I'm behind several secure networks and Norton is scanning my mail perfectly

Neither NIS 2008 nor NIS 2009 scan messages that come through ports other than 110 or leave through ports other than 25.

ALL SSL mail, like Gmail or GMX, to name some free examples, use ports other than these two.

Therefore, FloatingRed, the E-mail scanner on NIS, 2008 or 2009,  doesn't scan those messages 'on entry'. IT DOESN'T, PERIOD.

You can test it if you turn on the progress indicator in the e-mail scanner options. When you receive mail from Gmail through POP3, nothing happens in the system tray.

This is basic knowledge, FloatingRed. Basic.

This is going to sound facetious or sarcastic, but I am not being either; I am perfectly serious.

How would you know if Norton is scanning your mail perfectly?  Do you send yourself from another computer occasional mail with malware attached?  Do you try mailing such mail outward from your computer?

I keep hearing that Norton is working perfectly -- and that is my own assumption -- but my assumption is simply based on the software not crashing.

And to add another point, if you connect with your POP3 mail server over an SSL connection, it seems to me that these messages are impervious to the Norton’s spam filter too.

Thank you TomiRed for your answer!  That's how I thought NAV handled SSL e-mail.  So long as the realtime scanner would pick it up I guess I would still be safe.

It would be a nice feature to be able to see that files are in fact being scanned. My current A/V will show how many e-mails, web files & how many realtime files have been scanned, this is how I know it is working!!

Internet Settings > E-mail Scan, Configure > Check “Display progress indicator”.

It sounds like the answers are already here, but just to clarify.  E-mail scanning does not scan messages coming in over SSL connections.  If you download an attachment from an e-mail Auto-Protect will scan the attachment.

Thank you wesley’s four your answer!  I now understand what to expect when getting e-mail
