Major new update for the Mac

I just installed Norton on a Mac Parallels VM and there is a major new update.  I noticed that the install download was a DMG file and then the install was completely updated.

After installation, the entire product is updated and has a new interface and features.  Not sure why there is no word of this update here in the forum, but if you are so inclined, you might log into your Norton account and download the new version and give it a try.

It looks pretty good, my only concern with it is it now has https scanning and installs a Norton certificate that allows it to scan all https traffic.  You can turn this off, but it still shows the Norton cert when you check a website, so I would like more information on how this works.

Just thought those few of us that post here would be interested.

Maybe you should ask that question on Norton chat? This forum is pretty much dead. I still have the older version, haven't received the new version yet.

Does anyone on Mac with this new version V24.5.1 installed have this issue I posted here? I installed on two Macs yesterday and can't manage them in the way I could before. I'm on a Norton Small Business Subscription.

Thanks, Kenny

Some question from my side...  I think that nobody talks about this update because the only way to obtain it is uninstall the previous version and download/install the new one, and no one has had this need. I restored to factory setting my M1 Air and now I have this completely redesigned version, but before the reset and after the usually updates nothing was changed, Norton 360 version was 8.5.

regarding the certificate, I remember that the previous Norton asked you for permission to install the certificate when you tried to activate the VPN functionality, but you can refuse the request and everything works except for the VPN. Now the request is part of the installation and you cannot refuse it because it is mandatory.

Like you, I would like more information on how it works and whether I can avoid the Certificate.

OK Thank you. We posted @ the same time

@ VineRider

Can you post the information or a link to your version  24.5.1?  Any info would be appreciated.

Windows on ARM is not supported yet.  On the Mac, Apple Silicone is supported.  I cannot install Norton on a Windows VM on my Mac because it requires the ARM version of Windows.   You can run x86 and x64 programs on Windows ARM, but those run in user mode.  Norton would require kernel mode and those can’t run under emulation (this is my understanding but I could be wrong on the technical specifics)

Thank you for your prompt response.  Wonder why I have to use the ARM version and you do not?  Any ideas?

M1 MacBook Pro is my processor.

@ VineRider

What processor do you have; is it not ARM-based?

Mine is a Windows 11 ARM-based device so there is no update for my architecture.

@ VineRider

Thank you for the information -- very welcome news.  I will download that tomorrow if it is available for me.

Norton sent me a request for my experience with Norton for Mac on May 24 about 2 weeks ago.  The following is my reply regarding the virtual machine version, which I stated I would not recommend after 3 years of use with a rating of 2 out of 10, if that was a choice.  I had more complaints for the main version, Norton Security for Mac, especially regarding the nonfunctional VPN that a marked number of users have experienced.

"Additionally, the last posted update for UWP was 1.18 in May 2021 -- almost 3 years ago.  I have My Norton for Win11 Pro via Parallels Desktop, Norton 360 & Norton Security on_the-Go for Windows UWP (Universal Windows Platform) Version 1.22.248.0  This app is rarely updated (only 1 time) and it freezes up & nonfunctional about 50% of the time I attempt to use it."

I know that new major software versions take months to perfect and my rather long reply to Norton's request for comments about their Norton 360 for Mac likely had no impact whatsoever as a catalyst; however, we users should always reply honestly and respectfully to Norton when they send us requests for product comments.  Although Norton staff rarely reply to this forum/community they might make changes if enough of us inform them of flaws in their products when replying to surveys requesting a product rating of 1 to 10.

Yes, I do have the new Norton for Mac.  Testing it in a virtual machine.

Version number is 24.5.1

@VineRider

Caveat: I'm PC.  I've not seen new Norton 360 for Windows...at this time.
