I am getting an error message in my Windows Security Center, Malware Protection. The message is:

Norton AntiVirus is on but is reporting its status to Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported.

Can someone tell me what i can do to resolve this issue. I'm using Norton System Works Premier Edition 2008.

Hi Kc135,

Thanks for the update. Did you just recently start seeing this issue? Had you upgraded to Windows Vista from some earlier OS?

What other Norton or Symantec products do you have installed?

You should try uninstalling NSW and reinstalling and see if this corrects the issue. Note that if you upgraded from an earlier version of OS without uninstalling NSW first this might well have caused issues like this.

None of the above. My HP came loaded with Vista, i have all the latest updates that Windows put out for this OS. As for NSW, i purchased it when I purchased the computer 2 years ago.  The Norton Antivirus that was installed was completely removed before i loaded NSW.  I have also kept up with all the latest updates for NSW.  This issue first appeared about two weeks ago.I tried calling Tech support and they won't talk to me because my (1) year warranty is out, even though I have a renew'd subscription that's good for another 256 days.

Hi Kc135,

Thanks for the update. Was Norton AV the only other thing you previously had installed? No other Norton/Symantec products at present? As far as Tech support, that does not sound right since your subscription is current.

I would definitely recommend uninstalling and reinstalling NSW. If this does not work, please use the Norton Removal tool and then reinstall once again.

Steps for the Norton Removal Tool:

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products.

First uninstall NSW through the Conventional means through Uninstall Programs in Control Panel. Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.

Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.

Then please reinstall all your Symantec products and download all updates to them.

 Then see if the problem is still present.

Thanks, I'll look forward to further update.

Allen;

Thank You for your great support.  Now i wish i could get some telephone support from the Tech Folks.  I'm not real good at doing what you recommended without someone on the other end "Walking" me through it.  Do you have a "good" telephone number i could call for tech support.?

Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas.

Mike

Hi Kc135,

Thanks for the update. There really isn't much more to it than installing a program which I'm guessing you've probably done several times.

If you want to discuss with someone on the phone the only link I can give you is:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/contact/contact.jsp?selected_nav=6&pvid=nsw_2009

Norton Chat support is free but if you want the phone option, this is the best I can do. According to the site above they charge $9.95 though.

Let me know if this helps or if you decide to do this yourself I can provide more detailed steps.

Thanks

Allen

Allen;

Thanks for your super assistance and advise.  I went to the chat room and the Norton Tech. support was great.  They unstalled my NSW 08 version and installed the NSW 09 version.  All is "fixed".  Thanks again.  Have a Merry Christmas.

Hi Kc135,

Thank you for the update, that is very good to hear.

Please mark the appropriate in this thread as solved so that other users searching the forum will know that this is no longer an issue.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas.
