My Norton system works allowed a trojan through my defenses and now I'm infected with a very annoying malware called MalwareProtector2008. I followed the directions on Symantec to the letter on how to remove the spyware but a full system scan found no files in the registry to remove and all other attempts to remove the program have proven unsuccessful. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of this little beast?
Any help is appreciated
I do have NIS 2008. I made a misstatement when I said it was Norton System works.
So it is N.I.S. 2008 that let this Mis-leading Application in?
I would do a Full System Scan in Safe Mode once Updating your N.I.S. 2008 Product via LiveUpdate.
Are you able to submit a sample to Symantec? Malware Submission
And maybe this can help.
http://www.precisesecurity.com/threats/malwareprotector2008/Yes these were the instructions from the Symantec site. I did this already but with no success.
Stu’s suggestion, or mine, or both?
When did you do the Full System Scan? I would suggest you do a Full System Scan once symantec Release Virus Definitons for June 10.
Is your Product up-to-date?
Product is up to date. I updated my definitions last night. I then rebooted in safe mode and did a full system scan. The scan found nothing but one tracking cookie.
I'm going to give Stu's advice a shot though I'm not too comfortable playing around within my registry.
If you choose to do Stu's suggestion, back-up your Registry; although, I would suggest waiting until symantec Release Virus Definitions for June 10 and then do a Full System Scan and if that does not work, I would maybe do Stu's suggestion.
Viruses, Vulnerabilities, Spyware, Trojans and Other Threats are Modified on a Daily basis, so that is why I would suggest waiting until symantec Releases it's Virus Definitions for June 10.
Thanks Red. I’ll give it a shot after the virus definition updates today.

Red the link doesn’t work. It takes me to a non operating page.
Did you try?

Looks like the link in the original post has been fixed.

Well I went back and updated all of my virus definitions. Then I turned off System Restore. Then rebooted to safe mode. Then ran a full system scan again. Nothing was found.
So I went into the registry to look for the entries that were listed in the email from Stu. http://www.precisesecurity.com/threats/malwareprotector2008/
None of the registry entries that were listed were there.
I tried using a program that supposedly removes the Malware called SmitFraudFix but that didn't seem to work either.
I'm still open to ideas.
Troy
After trying everything I knew to do and trying everying I could read about by doing a Google Search I ended up going to Norton Spyware and Virus removal and paying some person with more experience and savvy than I had to remove the Malware.
Was it cheap? No.
Was it worth it. You bet it was.
Do you rememeber what it was he or she did to safe your machine?
After I gave my machine over to the spyware guru so he could take control he ran what appreared to be a very specialized proprietary Symantec software program. This software seemed to identify the different programs that did and didn't belong on my computer. Most were within the different user profiles and not embedded in the registry as I was lead to believe by what I had read. Deleting of Internet .temp files and mostly cleaning up profiles. A few programs were a bit resistant to deletion but by renaming them he was able to move then delete them.
I wish I could be more specific but I was also monitering a work conference call and could only participate peripherally in the removal and clean up of the Malware.
I understand don’t worry
