At work, where we use Symantec products to secure our system, I was directed to an Evian Babies commercial by a coworker. The YouTube site prompted me to update my shockwave application. The download told me that it was installing McAfee security scan plus as well as the shockwave update. I knew that this was incompatible with my system and next attempted to uninstall. Although the program had an add/remove program entry, it did nothing. I attempted to bring up the www.mcafee.com site (or the www.symantec.com site) using any internet browser. After leaving the address bar to direct the program to the site, the browser would immediately close. I attempted to email support@mcafee.com (a nonworking email address, I discovered). After I left the address to attempt to enter the subject, the email program would close. We haven't figured out a way of getting rid of this misleading malware yet and running an overnight scan of the system using the Norton Boot Removal Tool. Hopefully it finds the problem. After an incomplete 2 hour scan it didn't appear that it had detected the problem--I left it running. Is there a quick fix for this intractable threat?
Thanks,
Craig Miller
