Microsoft security update may break Windows 7

Thanks very much for this information. That does indeed look to be the correct update. I guess I'll uninstall it even though I have restarted several times since the update and have experienced no problems.

I did have two updates fail to install the first time, and the restart took somewhat longer than I was expecting, so I was worried, but neither of them were the one mentioned.

Anyone planning to uninstall this particular update? There's a nagging voice in my head that says leave well enough alone since I've had no issues. I'm conflicted.:smileyfrustrated:

Hi,
I've read the various messages and it appears that the problem is almost limited to Kaspersky users. I have the update installed on my primary and a test system, both with Norton protection and neither has given me any indication of conflict. And, yes both have been rebooted and cold booted a number of times

Stay well and surf safe

Microsoft security update may break Windows 7

Yes, the problem seems almost to be limited to Kaspersky users. I have rebooted several times since the update, and I have had no issues. However, the MS Security Bulletin MS13-036 was revised on April 11, 2013:

“Microsoft revised this bulletin to address known issues associated with installation of security update 2823324. Microsoft is investigating behavior where systems may fail to recover from a restart or where applications fail to load after this security update is applied. Microsoft recommends that customers uninstall this update. As an added precaution, Microsoft has removed the download links to the 2823324 security update. For instructions on how to uninstall this update, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 2839011.”

So, I am going to uninstall 2823324

I have a Vista home premium SP2. would this effect me ir just windiws 7 users?
When I did the search for new updates in Tuesday night, it found the required updates of course.
I always uncheck the malicious software removal tool and install it at a later time. I recall that there was another microsoft update that seemed to be automatically unchecked. But like a dufus I checked as well because it said critical ( or important, I can’t remember).
Now I wonder if it was the update in question?

I think it’s also interesting that the NBC news story informs people that Microsoft suggests uninstalling the update, but doesn’t tell you what the update is

Yeah Calls, I found that amazing too.  Why run the story and not include the particular update?

I think you're safe with Vista as it only appears to affect W7.

John,

In fact MS refer to this:

<< This failure occurs very early in the startup process, and no Memory.dmp file is created.

After you install security update 2823324, Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations or Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Servers versions 6.0.4.1424 and 6.0.4.1611 may display an error message that resembles the following:

Your license is not valid.

Therefore, some or all of Kaspersky protection components stop functioning.  >>

Microsoft has released security update 2840149. This security update resolves the issue that was introduced by security update 2823324. Security update 2823324 was replaced by security update 2840149.

Be aware of MS' comments:

Microsoft strongly recommends that customers with the 2823324 update still installed should uninstall the update prior to applying the 2840149 update.”

Eeep.  I installed the update without uninstalling the older update :smileyfrustrated:

So did I.  Don't worry about it.  This is from their FAQ.

I already successfully installed the original 2823324 security update and am not experiencing any difficulties. Should I apply the April 23, 2013 rereleased update (2840149)
Yes. On April 11, 2013 Microsoft provided guidance that all customers should uninstall security update 2823324, and expired the associated packages. In situations where customers did not uninstall the original update, they should apply the rereleased update (2840149), which replaces the expired 2823324 update. Customers do not need to uninstall the expired 2823324 update before applying the 2840149 update; however, Microsoft strongly recommends it. Customers who do not remove the expired update will retain a listing for 2823324 under installed updates in Control Panel.

Cheers,

Dave

phew. Thanks for that Krusty.

You're welcome and for what it's worth, I just uninstalled it from my systems now.  :smileywink:

Dave

I'm not.  If it isn't broken, don't fix it.  I am worried that uninstallation might break it since I have already installed the update and MS recommend uninstalling BEFORE installing the latest patch.

Same here.  I haven't had any problems with restarts since the 2823324 update on 04/10 .  The replacement update 2840149 installed yesterday 04/24 .

If I'm reading the MS info right about this, if I haven't seen any problems with several un-related restarts after the 2823324 update installed and subsequent 2840149 update installed, I should be ok.

I am glad to hear nobody has had any problems with the 2840149 update “on top” of 2823324.

It is a shame (=bad customer care) that MS is unable to use the correct words. If uninstalling 2823324 just is to remove the KB# from the update log, they should have said so (in stead of “Microsoft strongly recommends that...”). And, indeed, since they are capable of creating a complete OS, they should be able to create the 2840149 update to take care of whether 2823324 is installed or not.

I added post #11 as soon as I was aware of MS' “recommendation”. Hopefully some forum members read the message before the new installation and escaped from the unnecessary worries.

I uninstalled in Windows 7 and nothing was broken

I installed the updated file and nothing is broken

Hugh, I am not sure I understand what you mean. Did you uninstall 2823324 AFTER you had installed 2840149?

Personally: I installed 2823324 10.04.2013 – nothing broken. I uninstalled the update 13.04.2013 – nothing broken. I installed the replacement (2840149) 24.04.2013 – nothing broken.

How did you understand MS' advice “Microsoft strongly recommends that customers with the 2823324 update still installed should uninstall the update prior to applying the 2840149 update.”?

Normally I do not read the MS Security Bulletin, I just run the update process. This time I read the background information thanks to Krusty13's posts.
