Missing Toolbar - Using Mac OS X

First, I am a new MAC user and trying to get acquainted with this beast.  I purchased Norton Internet Security Mac Edition (even when everyone tells me I don't need it for a Mac).  My toolbar which told me "no fraud detected" was there one day and gone the next.  I am puzzled and not quite sure how to retrieve.  As a side note, I did install NIS and did an uninstall (because of mail issues suggested by Apple) and then reinstalled.  I am not sure if this is my issue or not.  I would appreciate any  help with this issue.  I did a search by topic and could not find any threads that matched my issue.  Thanks!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Apple!

As far as I am concerned there is always a reason to have protection. These days even Apples can be susceptible to viruses and attacks. Plus, ANY computer (Apple or PC) has the same vulnerability to phishing scams or malware.

Anyway, back to your original problem. The toolbar can be turned on or off via the following steps:

1. Go to the Symantec icon in the upper task bar (where the clock is) and click on it.

2. From the menu select the Norton Confidential item and from the dialog you will see "Enable Phishing Protection"

3. A black bar will now appear on Safari and you will be alerted when you visit a suspicious site.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any further information.

Thanks so much for the reply.  I was just starting to figure out my PC and bam the Apple IMac is a bit different.  I followed your steps and low and behold I must have phishing protection on because my only choice there was to disable.  Now I am puzzled because it is not appearing on my websites.  Hmmm, not sure what is going on then.  Is the "site verified" or "fraud detected" supposed to appear on every website I visit.  Or just certain ones?  I am so confused . . .  I really do appreciate your response and help.

In order to enable me to better understand what you are seeing (and to allow me to better help you).. .could you post a screen shot of what you see?

If you need help in getting a screen shot to post just let me know and I can walk you through that as well.

Thanks,

When you uninstalled NIS (per your first email), did you use the Symantec Uninstaller from the Applications/Symantec Solutions folder?

I am pretty sure I used the Norton uninstaller through the applications menu.

I tried to attach the screen shots.  I bookmarked the Norton page where I have my question.  Yesterday when I looked the Norton Confidential was working and I saw the green bar marked "site verified".  Today when I return to the bookmarked site, it does not.  I did check under Norton Confidential and It is "enabled" however.  I must be missing something extremely simple here.  Any suggestions?

I tried to attach the two screen shots.  The file extension was not txt, log, or lue.  When I tried to save again, I was not given those file extensions as a choice so I can't attach.

Do you think I should uninstall and then reinstall once again?

Thanks!

If you rename the screenshots in Finder to one of the permitted extensions, you should be able to attach them.  You may need to do a "Get Info" and turn off "Hide extension" to ascertain it has been changed.  Just make a note of the change when you post so that those saving the attachment know what it needs to be renamed back to.

I was earlier going to suggest trying another uninstall/install, but the fact that the issue seems intermittent makes me suspect it won't help (but it shouldn't hurt, either).

Are you using Safari or Firefox?  Which version?

I tried renaming them txt, log, or lue and they ended up giving me a bunch of garbled stuff.  I am using Safari 5.0.3.

Yes, they will appear garbled if you try to open them as the new extension, that's expected.  The point is to get past the attachment filtering on the forum (I'm not sure why it's so inflexible).  If you post them as txt and tell us what extension they started as, we can save them and rename them back, in which case they should open fine.

AFAIK Safari 5.0.3 should work fine, but I'll pass that along to the Anti-phishing experts.

Being the nut case that I am when sending attachments, is there any way to send to your Symantec email address?

Yes.  I'm not supposed to post it here, so I'll send you a private message.

Sorry for the troubles with the toolbar. I'm not completely sure what's going on, but if you could gather a little bit of info that'll help us debug the problems.

1. In the Applications folder on your Mac, go to the Utilities folder.

2. Open the application "Activity Monitor".

3. When Activity Monitor opens it should display a list of all the programs running on your Mac. Look for a program called "SymUIAgent". It should be running.

If SymUIAgent is not running then that is probably causing the problems. Please let me know if you find this process in your running applications list.

Also, do you have any other 3rd party applications installed that may try to install their own toolbar with Safari, such as 1Password or AVG LinkScanner?

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan,

Yes I did find this in the utilities folder.

Sorry forgot to answer the other question.  I am using Safari 5.0.3.  I have not downloaded any other programs.  It is pretty much how I got it from Apple.  The only thing I did add was an Epson printer.

Were you able to do steps 2 & 3 from Ryan's email, to check if SymUIAgent was running?

I guess I assumed if it was in the utilities folder that it is running.  When I click on it, it appears to be running but honestly, unless you tell me how to verify I can't say for sure.  It does list threads, ports, CPU time, context switches, etc.

To clarify, the Activity Monitor shows what processes (programs) are running.   We're asking about a particular one, SymUIAgent.  If you type SymUIAgent in the Filter box at the top of Activity Monitor, then it should show it in the list below.  If not, it isn't running.

Sorry for not giving clearer instructions, I know you're new to the Mac and this isn't something users typically have to deal with in any case.

Lee,

I appreciate your acknowledgement that I am new MAC user.  Yes, I did what you suggested and it did appear in the list.  So, it must be running.  Do you think I should just uninstall and then re-install?  If so, is there a proper way to do this?  THANKS, really.

I'm going to defer to Ryan as to whether uninstall would be appropriate at this point.  Is the green toolbar showing in Safari currently?
