No you no longer need the desktop short cut, you can right click on it, click on delete and click on yes to move it to the recycle bin.
Youa re on 32 bit and all should be well.

Thanks to all of you and your patience it is working. I suppose I may never know why after 11 months of operating on 64 bit it suddenly decided to stop, but I'll move on. This forum is an excellent medium for those of us who are not intitmate with all this stuff and thanks to your ability to bring it all down to plain talk people like me can keep our systems working.
