I finally found where I had hidden the images of my old WinMe system, and I need to access them to see if I can find some missing documents. I have a Win7 64-bit, but I have not reinstalled Ghost on it after a nightmare of trying to get Ghost 15 to install. I ended up following a procedure I found in these forums of having to create a new admin account just to install Ghost on the system. If necessary, though, I have a number of different images of my laptop, with either Vista and Ghost 14, or Win7 and Ghost 15 that I can restore to if I can get either one of those Ghosts to mount the old pqi files as virtual images. I have a vague recollection of getting some kind of error a couple of years ago in trying to read an old pqi file, so I don't want to go to that hassle if it's not going to open the file anyway. Does anybody know if either version of those Ghosts, 14 or 15, will open old Drive Image files? Also, is there a newer version of Ghost 15 that will not give me the install problems on Win7? I notice in another, old thread here, that Ghost 15Sp1 is available, but only through LiveUpdate. The whole point of wanting a newer version is to avoid the nightmare of the initial install, assuming that you have fixed the issue with the service pack.
By the way, the files from Drive Image are in the format of 640 MB files, the first one being something like BAK.pqi and the subsequent files being BAK.002, BAK.003, etc.
With Ghost 15, you should be able to restore\mount old .PQI files, as long as they are valid image files.
Before you install Ghost 15 into Windows 7, browse to the backup location and right-mouse click on INSTALL\setup.exe file, and choose to run as administrator. This will ensure your installation will proceed with the proper credentials. And if you get stuck during the install, we'll help out if you run into any problems. The nice thing about Windows 7, well, is that it isn't Windows Vista.
P.S. If you want the Ghost 15 installation disk with the service pack built in, drop me a private message and I can upload the files to an FTP for you.
Thanks. It actually works. What happened was that I did not know for a while that Vista and Win7 have problems refreshing folder views (see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/windows-7-does-not-refresh-folder-views/9d1ede23-2666-4951-b3b9-b6c1ce3d1ebf). Folders containing files may appear to be empty. Before I became aware of that issue, on some occasions, I had been merrily cleaning up some files and folders, reorganizing things, and, on coming to folders that were apparently empty, I would, naturally, delete them, not knowing that Microsoft had devised yet another way to make things miserable; some files that may be on old images disappeared in the process.
