MS security patches and ieframe.dll errors

I am also having this problem.  It started yesterday, but there is more to it.

I am running Vista 64, 360 v.3.0.

I had been having a "Bad Image IEFrame.dll" issue but no issues with 360.  The resulted in error messages whenever an app that presented content in "web" format launched and rendered IE 8 inoperable.  Fortunately I primarily use Firefox so IE wasn't missed.

Updated Vista with MS's latest security patches on Friday.  This resolved all problems related to ieframe.dll and everything seemed to be working fine for the rest of the day Friday and most of yesterday (Saturday).

Yesterday clicked on a link (an ad that presented itself) on Yahoo Mail home page and began having problems within minutes.  Basically from that point forward the computer would boot ok, but then would freeze after about 4 - 5 minutes.  I finally resolved the issue by doing a system restore going back to a restore point prior to the Windows Update.

Computer is working now, seems stable (hasn't crashed in last 3 hours), but now I am getting the ieframe.dll errors again (which windows update fixed) and new, never before seen errors with Norton 360.  Can't run live update and get warnings of risks.  Have attached a picture of messages.  Can't see it in the second picture, but it also warns that email scanning coming in and going out is disabled.

I suspect my issues are similar to those posted here.  Seeking guidance to solve.

The thread has a lot going on in it so if Quads could perhaps do a recap of the steps to follow I'd appreciate it.  I have downloaded  Malwarebytes, HiJackThis, GMER and Avenger but have not installed anything.  Also have not redone the Windows Updates so basically I am in the same state as I was a week ago except now Norton 360 has been broken.

Sorry for the length of message, but wanted to ensure I gave as much relavent information as possible.

Thanks for anything you can offer to get me back up and going in a safe way.

nickyt -

Welcome to the Forum.  Sorry for the trouble.  I have sent you a message to explain that we will try and move your message to its own thread as this helps keep soultions straight.  Check your Yellow Envelope in the upper right hand corner.

For now, install GMER and have it run a scan only, nothing more.  Save the log file and attach it to a reply post in the new thread or here (where ever your original post is).  You can attach the file by using the Add Attachments link right below the orange Post button.

Hi nickyt,

For timebeing, just try the fix tool mentioned in this Symantec Support Article. Eventhough it is meant for Norton 2009 program, hope it may also work in Norton 360 3.0 since it is built over the Norton 2009 engine. You can also try to download Intelligent Updater from the following link to manually update the virus definitions:

http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95

Download the first exe file and run it.

Thank you for moving this to it's own thread.  Now that I'm getting more "curious" and observant I'm starting to see that this isn't the same issue the other folks were having.

I ran GMER for malware / rootkits - it didn't find anything so the log file is empty.  So I'm completely transparent.  I downloaded the file from the website suggested, executed it and these are the results.  I did not see any option for doing any kind of definitions update.  When trying to attach the file I could not get the message to post - maybe because the attachment file size is zero.  Don't know.

I am begining to believe that my problems center on conflicts between Norton 360 and Windows Vista 64 running IE 8 64.

I now get the following upon system start up

Norton protection center request to take action

 Start Up Error.JPG

The .exe file referenced is the same one suggested in the support article offered.  Here's the rub though.  When I click the download button the support page launches IE - which isn't currently working (won't launch - no response when attempting) because of the ieframe.dll issue.  However, in this instance the IE shell with a Norton logo opens, but then a Data Execution Prevention error message.

I think the support site is hardwired to launch a version of IE other than IE 8 64.  I recall that I started having a problem with Norton support not being able to do things right after I did the MS critical update to install IE 8 64.

Upon Download Click.JPG

I was able to download the suggested .exe from the support article using Firefox. I have it and am holding it awaiting additional input with this new information available.

I am now out of sync with Windows updates having had to do a system restore yesterday.  My system was locking up after about 3 - 5 minutes.  Interestingly I've observed this morning that at or about 3 minutes I get a "pop up" notification near the systray telling me that Norton Anivirus is turned off, followed a few seconds later telling me that Norton Spyware is turned off.  Wonder if those messages were causing my lockups yesterday.  Here are the Windows updates that I installed Friday and backout yesterday.

To recap - No Malware or Rootkits found by GMER

Currently IE 8 not working - ieframe.dll errors

Installed updates above on Friday which fixed ieframe.dll errors, but then started having system lock ups after 3 - 5 minutes.

Antivirus and antispyware not turned on, and I can't turn them on

Live update will not run

Currently getting Norton Support notifications upon start up to download a file, but can't download from there because Norton Support utility wants to launch IE

Have downloaded the suggested .exe from the support article as it is the same on referenced in the Norton Support message at startup.

So, what now?  Should I run the Norton patch .exe file first, or do windows updates first, which "fixed" ieframe.dll errors and made IE functional.

I have resolved my problems.

To fix Norton I manually went in and started Auto protect and Spyware, then ran liveupdate, then disabled and turned off Backup services.  I had never set up backup, I use something else, but I had never bothered to tell Norton to stop warning me about it.  I stopped getting the error message referenced above - I never did run the hot fix utility - wasn't needed.

To fix IE I downloaded the must recent Windows Updates for IE which resolved the ieframe.dll issues

I did also find that I could not manually kick off creation of a restore point, and automatic creation had not run in over a week.  Discovered that the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) had somehow gotten turned off and was set to only be started manually.  I reset it to automatic, created a restore point.

I have since loaded all critical windows updates.  My system is running fine.

Glad you got this worked out manually.  Sometimes the best solutions is not to rely on automatic program corrections and wizards.  Thanks for letting us know how you fixed this.  Hopefully, others will benefit also.
