I am having this problem too. I've removed the program twice. Both times it started blocking accounts that were suppossed to be unmonitered, along with the multiple icon problem. I recently reloaded it again. It isn't blocking unmonitored accounts but it does have about 20 icons on the tray while my son is playing on the computer.
I have been having the same problem on all my three PCs at home. Uninstalling Norton Family and re-installing the latest version did not resolve this very annoying issue. All PCs are running Windows XP Pro SP3 with all the latest Windows updates. I would appreciate any help.
As I see I'm not alone with this problem )
I've had two icons several times also. In addition Norton Family has blocked web sites under administrator account.
Everything was OK after rebooting only.
Hope It will be fixed soon...
Okay, I too have been having these issues...the latest is the multiple icons and somehow switching of user activity. By this I mean I have four kids with their own user accounts on one computer running windows vista. One child's activity shows up on another child activity...weird stuff. I've gone through just about everything on the forums..upgrading my Norton internet security, upgrading Norton family, installing in safe mode, reinstalling product, even deleting all of the users off the account via norton online website...which took several days cause the server would have issues. So here I am everything is added back, placed the kids back one by one and set their settings...thought it was fine until my son said daddy its doing it again - a bunch of icons in the system tray. I checked the website for activity and its still doing the same registering user activity but not for that user or not activity at all. WHAT GIVES...HELP?
There are now 68 processes under my daughters account for Norton Online Family. (see image). I have uninstalled and reinstalled since the latest update. I see a lot of "private messages" being sent but no real solutions to this problem. Is it still being researched?
The typical usage pattern on the computer is for my kids to leave their logins active and use "Switch User" (this is Windows XP SP3). I have seen strange behavior such as being blocked from websites from the administrators account (perhaps due to having my children's logins active as well). The processes mainly appear when the system goes idle although I have seen them appear while my children are using the machine.
Is there anything I can do to avoid having this many processes active? The tray is too full. It is the first time I have seen Windows XP allow for scrolling in the tray.
I have been having the same thing as the last post with system tray and admin account getting blocked etc. lots of processes and shut down is slow due to this.
I am seriously looking into something other than Norton when my subscription is up in a couple months. Did Norton have some expert programmers leave the company or something? Seems like this was not a problem for years and now can't be fixed.
I am having this problem sometimes also, but only when logged on with windows (XP) admin account. Normal accounts - no problem.
Have re-installed etc. many times
Hi All,
I'll be glad to setup remote sessions when the users with the issue. It would be great if you could show me at the moment when the multiple icons start to appear.
Thanks,
Katie
I've been looking into this pretty extensively and have picked up on a pattern wherein multiple Norton Family Icons (in SysTray) will populate under the unmonitored account whereas the monitored account is fine. This is my theory and let me know what you guys think. Norton Family in the unmonitored account is repeatedly sending out "pings" (if you will) because it just can't grasp the fact that it is not installed under that profile. This is quite the situation. Even terminating multiple instances of "ccSvcHst.exe" under Task Manager did not remedy the situation.
Other oddities:- There have also been times where the supposed "unmonitored" account (if you dare go to a "controversial" site) will block you. Then it is recorded under the monitored account's history page when you access onlinefamily.norton.com. Then, maybe I'm missing something, you can clear alerts, however, you cannot clear history to erase said "controversial" site that should not have been monitored in the first place. Yikes. Then, at least what I'm doing, is having to erase the whole profile to clear say, an "unsavory" history. This is an inconvenience insofar as then when the account is re-created, you then have to reset parameters and manually re-enter domains that Norton falls short on, but you still want blocked.
Documented stubbornness:- Even if in the unmonitored account say if Norton Family is blocking you when it shouldn't, if you try a work-around of employing MSCONFIG to quench it that attempt fails miserably as well. I had to laugh. "Unchecking" Norton Family under "Services" - - then re-starting, going back under the services tab of MSCONFIG in the supposed unmonitored account although Norton Family Service is unchecked Norton Family Service, if you scroll to the right, is still running! Wow. I guess the engineers knew children would be trying this maneuver and thought two steps ahead. (laughs) However, all in all, this is supposed to be the unmonitored account.
Conclusions:- Although I have done my "fair share" (so to speak) of troubleshooting back in the day namely the "Scenario Editor" in Rollercoaster Tycoon II, I will say, straightaway, that the engineers are going to have their hands full with this one. They might even have to put the Norton dog mascot to work
Despite all this quirkiness, believe it or not, I still appreciate this program and will still use it over competitors, flaws in all. I have to admit, I'm still not bothered enough by these minor incongruencies to pursue further troubleshooting with Sym Employees. Big deal. So I see multiple icons, really they are trying to subliminally tell you that you should not be "browsing" in an unmonitored account. So I have to delete a profile and redo it - - so what. After confronting Trojan.FlashBlast, this is small potatoes. I just have a bond with Norton/Symantec. I'm certain a venerated company such as this will eventually work everything out. By the way, if anyone needs help installing Norton Family - - just let me know. Suffice it to say, I've become an ol' pro.
Please note:- Empirical testing I performed with respect to the Norton Family Program was done on Windows XP Professional Edition Service Pack 3.

Hi Hammer_Bro,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write us. I appreciate your feedback. The multiple icons issue is an known issue and the team is working on the issue as well other issues.
Thanks,
Katie

Exactly what I am getting. The only thing I'd add is that it is only a problem for me on an 'unmonitored' non-Admin account. If I log in as unmonitored Admin then it seems to be OK - i.e. no multiple icons and no blocking.
Hope for a fix soon as I'm not 100% sure that the monitoring it's actually doing is OK - the log seems a bit empty for the amont of time my son uses the PC.
Thanks,
Ajbic
p.s. I should have also added that it only seems to be a problem for me if I log in after my son has been logged in. If I log into first then the multiple icons don't appear.
Windows 7 64bit.
Hi ajbic,
Thanks for the update.
Thanks,
Katie
I have a newly installed XP Home SP3 machine, fully patched. What I am seeing is multiple icons only for non-admin accounts, whether they are monitored or not. As others have noted, I am using the switch user capability in XP, and as a result multiple desktop sessions are often running on this machine.
However, I do not see multiple icons for any account if I log in to my unmonitored local admin account first and leave it running. Is it possible that the flaw is related to having a non-admin user taking session 0 on the machine? In the short term I am leaving my admin account logged in when I restart the machine, which for me works around the problem until a fix is available. Hopefully this will help someone else.
Hi MinnesotaDad,
This is a known issue and the team is working on this.
Thanks for your patience.

I can't wait for a resolution to this Very Annoying problem. Running Win XP Pro SP3 with all updates. Four users are using this PC (not at the same time, of course), each with their own account (admin privileges).
I, too, would love to see an update on this issue. Not only is the multiple-icon issue frustrating, but the fact that NOF is monitoring and blocking sites on what are supposed UN-monitored accounts is beyond frustrating. Some days I work from home and my wife uses our kids' computer to check her email, etc. It's ridiculous how often she gets blocked trying to access some fairly innocuous things (for an adult) while logged in under her OWN "unmonitored" profile.
Hi,
We are working on the issue and the fix will be included in the next update.
Thanks
Katie
Another frustrated user here. We have NOF installed on two Win7 64 PCs. Same issues reported by other users:
-- Multiple instances of NOF running in task bar
-- Mousing over them does not close them
-- When I log on my Admin account, I receive pop-up from NOF that it is monitoring activity on this account. I right click to temporarily disable NOF and choose option until restart or log off. 1-2 minutes later, another instance of NOF appears and once again tells me NOF is monitoring activity on the admin account.
-- I have uninstalled and reinstalled upwards of 5 times. These 5 reinstalls are AFTER I did a clean reinstall of Win7 64.
Strangely, this happens all the time on my PC and never on my wife's PC. Both Win7 64, both running current version of Norton Internet Security.
I have considered upgrading to NOF Premiere, but my frustration would quickly turn into anger if this were happening on a paid service.
At least in my circle of friends, product recommendations mean a lot. We all have kids the same age, and we all care about their on-line safety. In its current state, I'm afraid I cannot recommend NOF to my freinds.
Please fix this as soon as possible?
Thanks, a frustrated but hopeful user.
Ditto with the icons- record breaker today with 35-40. Time for a reboot! Started happening directly after we last updated.
Also sometimes getting an email report saying "The Norton Family browser plug-in was unexpectedly turned off...". Not sure if related.
Good luck NOF folks with quick but proper fixes. Patiently waiting.
