Multiple Issues with Online Family

Hello, I have noticed in the past week that it's been a hit or miss if NOF is actually working on the computer I have it installed on.  For instance a few days ago, I notice it installed but wasn't protecting (as in I could bring up a porn site with no problems).

When I tried to get it going it said I had to put in a serial # or activation code.  Since I couldn't find either, I decided to do a full uninstall & reinstall.  When I got to the part to sign in, so I can assign the user to the Windows account, it gave me some message saying that the computer was already tied to another account.  Which I'm wondering how that could be since I was using the same sign on, when I initally signed up.

Eventually the message cleared itself & I was able to assign the user to the Windows account.  However now a few days later I'm noticing that again NOF is not protecting the computer again.  It's like the icon by the clock is there, but ther service isn't running.

This is starting to be very annoying...

Hi choliscott,

You said "....When I tried to get it going it said I had to put in a serial # or activation code..".  Could you let us know what you do to "get it going"?  Is it possible you could post the message that asks you to put a serial #?

What version of Norton Family is installed on the machine?

What operating system is running on the machine?

Thanks,

Katie

To get it going, I just let it sit there.  After a few hours, I logged back in to NOF (from another machine), which it said it detected a machine running NOF, but had no accts assigned to it (earlier, which i forgot to mention, I had deleted all machines from NOF, but kept the user profiles).  I was then able to assign the user to Windows account & started to recieve data on which sites were being visitied.

The version is the latest version (or the one available last Friday)  & I'm using W7 64 bit Professional.

Also I mentioned that it appars NOF wasn't working when i last checked it.  It seems to be working, however it seems to be a 2 day delay before I see any activity.  For instance, when I log into the user account that is protected.  It says its working & if I try to goto a couple of block sites, they are blocked.  However I'm not getting anything on NOF web portal.

Also everytime the protected user logs in, I get the following message:

"Norton Family's web browser monitoring component is either disconnected or disabled. Please restart the web browser or restart your computer."   but yet, when I am recieving almost up the minute updates, it will show which sites were blocked, & which ones were allowed.

Hi choliscott,

For the message "Norton Family's web browser monitoring component is either disconnected or disabled...", when you see the message next time, please check the browser that your child uses to see if the Norton Family Extension is enabled.  You can find it by clicking Tools -> Manage Add-ons in IE if IE is being used.

Norton Family is recording the logs and saved them on the backend servers correctly.  It will take a while for the logs to be sent up on the website for the parents to review at the moment as there are lots of logs pending.  After you try to access a blocked website, does the website appear at Activity -> Web after a few minutes?

Thanks for your patience.

I will have to check a blocked website & if it appears here in the next couple of days.

The child doesn't use IE, he uses firefox instead.  Does that matter in regards of the family extenstion is enabled, or along as its enabled, it doesn't matter which browswer they use?

choliscott,

Norton Family supports IE and Firefox, so it makes no difference if the child uses IE or Firefox.

If the child uses Firefox and you receive the alert, then please check Firefox ->Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions -> Norton Family and make sure the Norton Family extension is enabled.

Thanks,

Katie

choliscott,

Seems like you are having nothing but trouble with this.  That is what happens with partial uninstalls.  By the way, I not only have a serial #, but an order #, AND a product key.  If I were you, I would start completely fresh.  For example, deleting ALL accounts.  Next, remove the programme from add/remove programmes.  Next, clear out %temp%, TEMP, PREFETCH, and cookies.  I would even clear out any BHOs pertaining to NOF in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – Software – Microsoft – Windows – Current Version – Explorer – Browser Helper Objects (hopefully the NRT can handle deleting the registry entries).  As alluded to a second ago, run the latest version of the Norton Removal Tool (NRT).  Once and only once the aforementioned has been performed, THEN attempt to get NOF again.

Additionally, I would advise being very careful about bringing up lewd Websites - - that, in and of itself, can cause problems on your computer; not to mention the fact that ransomware is slamming a lot of them.  Unless of course you are thoroughly confident with virus remediation, then it might be a different story.

Ok it looked like the add on was enabled on IE, but not on Firefox.  I did enable it on Firefox.  I checked the log file after a few minutes & there was no listing of the site I just visitied.

I'm noticing the log file is slowly populating with the sites that was visited, but it looks like it's 5 days behind.

Can I ask why all of a sudden there is a backlog of populating the parental portal, when it seems to be up to the minute previously

I recently did a whole Windows reinstall & was still having some of the issues I mentioned (along with other people I noticed).  The only time I can really make any changes to this computer is when they go to Grandma's as the child is very impatient, which in turn causes something that should only take maybe an hour to complete, more like 6 hours to complete.

So far the service seems to be working in real time, just not getting the up to the minute sites visited on the portal listing.

Hi choliscott,

Are you still getting delayed logs?
