Issue abstract:My Norton application says Set Up Protection 5/6. That message never goes away even after clicking it. It says the setup is al done for my subscription. What exactly is missing?
Detailed description: There is a message inside My Norton that implies something needs to be setup. Yet nothing needs to be setup. I removed Norton with removal tool and reinstalled it yet this message persists. I even got a prompt today telling me I need to âcomplete my setupâ. What is going on?
Product & version number:24.12.9725 (build 24.12.9725.902)
OS details: Windows 11 24H2
What is the error message you are seeing?Set Up Protection 5/6
After reinstalling Norton, it actually says âSet Up Protection 4/6â. VPN is configured but is off. The message is so vague. 4/6 of what? I think what really bugs me is not that there is a bogus vague message but it even prompted me to complete my setup today.
I donât have a Set Up Protection showing on my installation. Are you able to click on the Set Up Protection? If so, does that show what is needed to be set up?
Itâs always been this way, does not show what what you have set, only what you have not. Mine reads 3/5, other 2 I do not want, If you log into your on-line, first page that opens, scroll down to âMy Protectionâ, may make it clearer⌠Clicking on My protection on top bar brings down a different selection, once you have left the initial page, seems now way of getting back from top menu bar.
Two devices that May have issues do not - issues are I have not used ALL additional items. It appears all of us users donât have the exactly the same interface, Iâm in UK & seem to get updated versions before other users.
I can click it. It does itâs thing (whatever that is) and goes back to saying Set Up Protection 4/5. It never tells you what isnât setup nor does it show you what it is doing. Worse of all, I actually got a notification telling me that my setup is incomplete. You go through the same thing of running a set up and it does nothing. Itâs been this way since new GUI was implemented. On my laptop on the other hand, I have no such message. As far as I can tell it has all of the same features as my desktop. So I think this is one that engineering should look at. Itâs likely to be a false indication.
Looking at the image in your first post, going down the right side you have green checkmarks beside the 5 items we can see. If you scroll down that list to look at the Norton Browser item, does that have a green checkmark? If not, that would be the sixth item that Norton feels you need to set up.
Yes indeed. No idea. Mine was 4/6 after Norton removal and reinstall. Then I setup and ran a cloud backup and it went to 5/6. But si can not find anything else to setup. How about a little more information? 5/6 tells you nothing
CaveatâIâm old and cynical, but I think itâs part of Nortonâs ploy to get customers to explore more products theyâre marketing. We all know that unknowns cause more anxiety, which in turn motivates us to explore. If they truly wanted to be helpful, theyâd provide enough details to adequately inform us so we can remedy the problems, if and when appropriate.
Specifically about those fractionsâI believe if you activate every tool (VPN, Cloud backup, etc.) youâll get a perfect 6/6.
I activated every one of them and on my desktop I get 5/6. But in my laptop no such âmissingâ setup. Yet the software installed and my installation steps are identical? Seems like a bug to me.
@bjm This unanswered question (or the elephant in the room) isâŚWhy isnât N360 removing the tracking cookies? Because Norton now sells an AntiTrack product Norton AntiTrack + Private Email - Antitracking tools for online privacy.
I use Firefox and periodically scan (on demand) with the free version SuperAntiSpyware. It does an acceptable job of finding tracking cookies but I have very few.
Final question. I wonder if such a high tracking cookie count is real. If it is, maybe time to switch browser or change its settings.
@bjm My guess is that the high number of tracking cookies in Nortonâs âalertâ is bogus. I have no proof. Just a hunch.
As I wrote, I personally donât have problems with cookies and cache. My browser is set to clear data every time itâs shut down. I canât speak for other browsers but Firefox does a very good job. I also donât use any of Nortonâs browser extensions. Firefox does an adequate job of keeping me away from malicious sites. Norton extensions slow everything down. There are occasions when Iâm forced to use a different browser because of the website. Thatâs when I use SuperAntiSpyware. I found a certain browser which shall remain nameless that doesnât completely clear all the cookies consistenty.
