For now you could try  to use NIS 2009 for now. It's way faster. Besides that it won't be that long vefore N360 v3 will be in beta. That will be much lighter

I have Norton 360 2.0. I do alot of power hungry work, so I need all the power I can get out of my computer.

I have turned off all automatic scans, tasks, everything. Norton should do nothing without asking me.

In spite of that, I could be in the middle of a game or something, where I need alot of power. And all of the sudden, I get a pop up on the toolbar telling me Norton is running a background scan and hear my hard drive start accessing files. The whatever i am doing, including windows itself starts to lag like crazy. I can minimize the game, look in the Resource Manager (in Vista) and see a huge group of ccSvcHst.exe entries accessing my files and sucking up my resources.

I'm running 3.4 GHZ Dual core CPU, 4GB RAM, with a blazing FSB on the MB, so Vista (and everything else, for that matter) normally has no problem running. That is until Norton runs one of it's scans without asking me.

Why is this and what can I do to stop it? I need to be able to completely control when Norton runs background scans and take up my resources. If I can't, then I'm going to have to find another security program.

Well Under Settings>Virus Protection and Removal>Uncheck Automatic Task Popups

Also, switching to Norton Internet Security 2009 will fix the issue. Its new engine is way faster and does all its work when the computer is idle. It also has a silent mode, where you can prevent NIS09 from issuing pop-ups or running scans, great for games, presentations, etc.

As for me, there is always only 1 ccSvcHst process with Vista, wheter running scans or whatever. Try turning off evasdropping protection.

Your message is likely to be moved to the Forum dealing specifically with Norton 350 so don’t be surprised if it appears there. The mover will leave a message here linking to the new location – it won’t just disappear!

OK guys, I've tried everything I can. I did all the stuff you say here and anything i've heard elsewhere, and I uninstalled the addon pack, which someone suggested, and apparently got deleted. I think  i have tried disabling every option in 360. BUT N360 is still running scans while I'm working. So I'm gonna go get NIS and see how it works.

So, in my personal opinion (and I've been using and building computers since '94): for the advanced, gaming user, N360 2.0 is not your best choice.
