N360 V6 does not restore all files and no indication why

I've just had to reload my PC with Windows Vista Home Edition 32 Bit and its associated service packs 1 and 2. Once done I successfully reinstalled N360 V6 from my online account at www.mynortonaccount.com which was surprisingly easy - thank you Norton. My attention then turned to restoring all my files which are backed up to 2 x DVD every fortnight with Norton 360 backup, I keep 4 copies of backups. To my horror N360's restore function only restored some of the files. A message is written to the Security History log file which identifies which files were not restored but there is no explanation as to why. Restoring from previous backups also results in the same failure to restore. If I try and restore selected files that also fails but again no reason.

How can I find out why the files won't restore and recover them?

And the obvious question for Norton is: Why after regularly backing up all my files has N60 let me down when I need it most?!

Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!

An example of the Security History message is: "Some files could not be restored. See Security History for a list of those files."

If I double click on one of those entries a list of Restored and Failed files is displayed but for the failures no explanation

Hi,

Without posting any personal information can you provide some examples of those filenames?

Thanks

Firstly thanks for taking an interest in this problem. Files that will not restore are mostly my own files created with MS Word/ Excel etc and a backup of my Norton 360 Identity safe and some mp3 music files purchased and downloaded from Amazon. Not sure why the actual names are important but if it helps one of the excel spreadsheets was called 'c:\users\clive\documents\ms office\excel\Here.xls', one of the mp3 files is called 'c:\users\clive\music\amazon mp3\carbon based lifeforms\interloper\02 - right where it ends.mp3', and a sample pdf file which did not restore is 'c:\users\clive\downloads\p42vt30bmanual.pdf'. Having gone through the list again it would appear that some of the files not restored where deleted 'ages' ago and shouldn't be on the backup!

Thanks, Clive

Dick, I just wanted to add that although N360 appears to be attempting to restore some old (deleted) files in amongst the current files I am not using an old backup. I do re-use rewrittable DVDs but N360 Backup reformats them each time. Also the backup date time is displayed when doing the restore

I've fixed this and all by myself too although there are still questiuons for Norton to hopefully respond to! The trick is to forget the main N360 UI altogether. I have now managed to restore approx 99% of all my files by doing the following:

1) Put Backup CD/DVD in Drive Wait for Autorun to supply options and select "Restore From Norton 360 backup' - This will launch 'Portable Restore'

2) Click on 'Select Files to Restore' Decide where you want to restore to (Original location or User specified alternative location)

3) Select files to be restored

4) Click on 'Restore Selected'

5) Check the results screen to see what has restored, hopefully all files will have a status of 'Succeeded' and not 'Invalid File' which indicates the file could not be restored.

6) If backup spans more than one CD/DVD then repeat the above for each CD/DVD

Question for Norton: Given that N360 Backup writes the backup file and then verifies it why can a backup DVD contain 'Invalid files' which prevents them from being recovered?!!

Anyway, I'm giving up on this now and searching for a decent backup/restore tool!!!
