Naming of the Computer in Settings / Profile

Hi,

I noticed a new "feature" in version 2.8.0 5 regarding the naming of the computer when it is added to the Norton Family account, and the way it shows up when you log on to Norton Family and go into Settings.

Way back when, you could choose the name of the computer when you added it to Norton Family.

Then in later versions, prior to 2.8.0.5, it would take the Computer Name directly from the operating system.

Now, with Version 2.8.0.5, it is adding an operating system tag - "_Win7" or "_WinXP" - to the end of the Computer Name.

But if the Computer Name is longer than 8 characters, it is truncating the name after the 8th character, and then adding on the operating system tag - "_Win7" or "_WinXP"

In a computer lab situation, often the only thing that makes the Computer Name unique is what's after the 8th character. Like a number. All the computers in the lab have the same Computer Name except for a number at the end.

Why is it necessary to truncate the Computer Name or add the Operating System tag in the first place????

PLEASE don't do this!!!!

Hi dbdan22,

I'll check with the team for this.

Thanks,

Katie

So what's the status of this?

Hi dbdan22,

Our QA team has checked into the issue.   They were able to manually input characters past the 8th character on the computer name during the binding to a NF account, and all references to that computer displays the full name they typed in.  They said you can accomplish what you want currently but it will have to be done manually at the binding of the computer to a NF account.

Thanks,

Katie

Hi,

I noticed with the July 3rd update (2.8.0.9) it stopped appending "_Win7" or "_WinXP" to the end of the computer name. Thank you.

I just installed NOF last week and it still appends "_Win8" at the end of all my PC's name.

... and I just recently upgraded a few PC's from an older version of NOF to 2.8.0.9, and it also stuck "_Win7" after the name as well.

So apparently the problem is not solved after all.

Why are they doing this ??? If you're doing an upgrade, why doesn't it preserve the name of the computer ?!?!?!
