I’m sorry you did not get a reply sooner about this issue. Thank you for updating us on the status of your issue. As you may be aware, Norton AntiVirus 2008 is a free upgrade for users with existing Norton AntiVirus 2007 subscriptions.

I'm using NAV 2007. I want to configure the instant messenger scanning feature for Windows Live Messenger, which is version 8.5 of MSN messenger. I recently re-installed NAV 2007 on my computer, which runs Windows XP SP2. The instant messenger settings on NAV 2007 does not have a listing for Windows Live Messenger. When I use the search for instant messaging clients option, it says successfully configured instant messaging clients, but the instant messaging scanning status remains off.

This worked before when I was using version 7 of MSN Messenger, but won't work now.

Thanks.

Tony, thanks for your reply.

I was not aware that NAV 2008 was a free upgrade if I had a valid subscription for NAV 2007.

In fact, I got a couple of pop ups in the last couple of months that encouaged me to upgrade to NAV 2008. When I followed the links, they said it would cost me $29 something to upgrade.

So if the upgrade for NAV 2007 subscribers is free, somebody needs to fix the link that the reminder popups lead to.

Tech support provided me with an upgrade link and a key.

When you spent the $29, did you get another year's subscription to Norton AntiVirus? When was your Norton AntiVirus 2007 due to exipre? This does seem strange, if your subscription was not due to expire.

I have sent you an email about this issue; please let me know as soon as possible about the charge. Thanks!

Hi Tony:

When I got to the link that said there would be a $29+ charge to upgrade to NAV2008 from NAV2007, I didnt proceed any further. My NAV 2007 subscription doesnt run out till September.

So I declined to upgrade since I thought there was a charge. Tech support provided me a link and key to upgrade to NAV2008 at no charge.

If other NAV2007 are getting the upgrade popup I did, they may not know you can upgrade for free.

The answer to this is that NAV 2007 does not support instant messaging scanning for Windows Live Messenger. After many messages with Norton Tech Support, he had me install NAV 2008.5.

The NAV 2008 version lists MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger as one of four instant messaging programs it protects. NAV 2007 only listed MSN Messenger. If you use NAV 2007 and upgrade MSN Messenger to Windows Live Messenger, NAV instant messaging scanning doesnt work.

NAV 2007 also adds Trillium to the list of instant messengers it covers.

Wish tech support had told me this at the start of this troubleshooting process, instead of many emails, troubleshooting steps and days later.

Incidentally, removing NAV 2007 with windows add/remove programs did not work. It hung up. Had to use the Norton Removal tool to get rid of NAV 2007
