Recently 3 computers I manage have been stricken with the same symptoms.

Windows crashes when attempting to extract more that 1 file from a .zip archive or download more than 1 item from a web page.

Windows reports the problem is with officeav.dll.  Turning off the "Scan office documents" feature in NAV solves the problem, however I'm not sure I want to leave this turned off.

Removing and reinstalling NAV 2008 doesn't solve anything.

I run XP SP3 on all 3 machines...any ideas?

Try upgrading to NIS 2009 for free.

Thanks for the help...I'm a little reluctant to upgrade, (Just my opinion) I find NAV 2008 to be kind of intrusive, I know the full NIS suite is more so...and since my computer is more than a year old and maxed out on RAM I'm not sure upgrading to a newer version is my best option.

This might be a stupid question...(There are no stupid questions, just stupid people who ask questions, yes?)...but if NAV is scanning office documents anyway, why is there an option to turn this feature on and off?  What does that option do?

I am going to guess at the answer to this.

If I remember correctly, there is a macro-virus that can infect Office documents.  It can only work if your Office security settings are low enough.  Some people keep them high and they have no problem.  Some need to keep them low and want to check the documents.

I think that most security problems don't check every file for the presence of such macros, maybe because they are so easily hidden until the document is opened in Word.

So the user chooses whether to spend the overhead and keep his or her low macro security settings or whether to skip the macro-check because he doesn't need it since the security settings are high.

Hello KevinWisconsin,

There is an option to turn off Office Document Scanning in the settings area. This may be off by default (I know it is for the 2009 products). There are malicious macros that can be placed in Office Documents that can call on other files and install them without use intervention, or if the user selects to allow macros to run on the document. Office Scanning will scan the documents for these types of attacks. AutoProtect will protect your computer from viral attacks, but this adds another layer of security for Office Documents that may contain malicious macros.

I would try NAV 2009, as we've made it less intrusive, as well as lighter on system resources. You could give it a shot, and always go back to 2008 if you feel you prefer 2008.

I hope this answers your question. If not, please let me know.

In 2008 versions, the option to turn off/on scanning office documents is OFF by default. If you have a different version and if you find that the issue resolves after turning off the particular option, you can leave it as off. Because Autoprotect will scan any office file whenever they gets modified, copied, moved, sent or received. So you do not have to worry about at all.
