since vista sp23 update 3 nights back it seems if i click to get files checked (which used to be at 81% not needing scan and now is at 50% since version changes with sp2) the query to your server by NAV takes forever and sometime never finshes.
has anyone else experienced this? i assume your servers get bogged down with file versions not being up to date with changes?
I just ran the Insight scan and it worked as always. There were more querries to the server but everything went as it should. If you leave the Insight window up and do a refresh, are you saying that if you leave it up for an hour, let's say, that it never finishes?
i wouldn't wait an hour for anything but in the 5 minutes or so i give it which is a heck of a lot longer than i ever had to wait before no it never finishes it's refresh.
it has continued it's query as if it was getting no response from server at all.
Have you allowed your system to do its usual background tasks including the background insight scans? You may find that once the scans are done as usual, and allowed to be submitted during the usual process, the insight will even itself out. It will take a while to go back to the prior 80% which changes on a regular basis anyway. The more you do and use in your computer will change the number of files requiring a scan. An immediate insight scan will probably not change it back to 80% anyway.
This could also be related to the fact you are running 64 bit Vista. Have you already upgraded to the most recent build of NAV 2009?
Also, how did you upgrade to sp2? Via Microsoft Update or through the Microsoft download center? If it was via the MS download center were you sure to download the SP designed for 64 bit Vista?
16.5.0.134 is the build....been using nav (only norton anti virus through the good builds and the terrible bloatware builds but never the other products just NAV) since peter norton owned it and it always updated itself before... it doesn't now?
64 bit has nothing to do with it at all.... its a server query i am hung on. you cannot install the 32 bit on a 64 bit build. and it was on my update notices, ie windows update. yes it absolutely was 64 bit.
was at 92% trusted with my files before sp2 so i know sp2 gave me new builds of files and it will take a while for that to show on insight.... as now it's only 51% which is understandable.
thats not my issue though, as my problem is when i do a refresh the it takes forever to "query server"... i just close it as it the only time it appears to actually finish it's query is the first one when i open insight.

Can you tell us at what point the insight refresh appears to hang. I find that when I click on the Insght link, it goes directly to collecting files. It then provides a trust level. If I then go to refresh, it will go through several cycles consisting of collecting files, building server query, waiting for server response, and applying response. This may happen in several consecutive cycles if there are a lot of files to check, which would appear to be the case for you. There is also a popup that you should see while the refresh option is cycling.
What part of this is not happening for you. Please watch to see which component is hanging or slowing.
the hang isn the whole process other than what at least appears to me the actual opening of the window seems to get a complete query otherwise if i click on refresh:
collecting files>querying server>waiting for server for response>building server query>around and around.
i just close it....
i run a very clean lean machine. i am going to setup a log to see if nav is actually sending it's query at time i click on it.
Please run it again and do not close it. It is cycling as it is supposed to do. It will stop when it completes all of the cycles. It appears to do the insight refresh in batches, rather than in one chunk. Allow it to complete. The other night mine cycled about eight times and since I am on XP, I have not had a major service pack update.

I agree with delphinium. Before we search any further into what the problem is allow norton insight to complete.
After reading the posts in this thread again, I have some other questions and a suggestion.
Have you noticed any of the other server type functions not working on NAV2009? By server type functions I mean the Pulse Updates and Automatic Updates. Any Community Watch submissions have taken place since the SP2 update? (You can check these in you History logs.) If these are also affected then perhaps NAV2009 was affected by the SP2 update and a clean reinstall will help. If you do not have any other Norton products on your system then the steps below are fine to follow. If you do have other Norton products you can try this but just do not use the Norton Removal Tool as it will delete all Norton products at one time. If you do not have any other 'quirks' in Norton other than Insight then carry on with the other suggestions.
Reinstallation of NAV2009
1) Copy your Norton key for safe keeping just in case you need it. You should not need this but it is better to have the key on hand than to need it and not have ready access to the key. You can find a copy of your currently installed key in My Documents\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus_Key.txt.
2) Download the Norton Removal Tool from this link. Norton Removal Tool Choose the 2009 product link and the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to your desktop. Directions are on the link page.
3) Download the latest version of NAV2009 from this link. Reinstall After Removal Choose the 'I have Norton Antivirus 2006 or later' link on this page. On the next page you can download the latest NAV2009 installation software.
4) Disconnect from the Internet until your system needs the connection later in the process.
5) Go to START > Norton IAntiVirus > Uninstall and let NAV2009 uninstall itself. It will want to reboot the machine. Let it.
6) During the booting of your system, go to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu is shown. Choose the Safe Mode option (no network or command prompt).
7) In Safe Mode, run the NRT tool. When the tool is finished, click on the Reboot to restart your system.
8) Let Windows boot into normal mode now.
9) Install NAV2009 by double clicking the file you downloaded and saved to your desktop in step 3.
10) When the installation asks for your key or says activating your product, reconnect to the internet then (plug your cable in or turn on the wireless card). [Note: The installation may not ask for your key and activate by using the previous key on the system. Your system will still need to connect to the internet at this point so updated definitions can be downloaded.]
11) Run the Live Update process manually until Live Update reports that there are no more updates to download, NAV2009 is fully up to date.
12) Reboot your system now to insure that any components updated during step 11 are loaded properly.
thanx i will let it run then... just somewhat out of ordinary as it always was darn quick.... i am on cable second level comcast so it wasn't my end of any slow down. and before sp2 it was wham bang done.
i had went on assumption either norton was having a real time being queried or the data base was choking on all the new file names, dates, certificates, etc.
Actually, the other posters here had this nailed as to what was happening. The Insight Level scan you see (with the gage graph) is only checking what files and processes are loaded in memory at that time. The Insight process scans each file in memory and calculates a SHA256 hash number to uniquely identify this file. Insight transmits this hash code and files name to Symantec which looks up the hash code in the Insight backend database. If everything matches, the server transmits the Insight calculated Trust level for that file back to your machine.
SP2 for Vista has thrown a small kink in the system as now a large percent of the MS OS files have been changed. The new calculated SHA256 hash values are different and it will take a little time for the system to catch up with the new OS files. What you are experiencing (along with the rest of us who updated to SP2) is the delay in checking all these new files.
As an example, let's say you had 10000 files in memory with 97% Trust level before the SP2 update. Only 300 files would have to be checked when an Insight scan was ran. It may have taken only 2 or 3 server query cycles to do that. Now, with the Trust level at say 50%, there are 5000 files to be checked. Now it may take 20 cycles to check all these files. As long as the cycles run and do not hang, then everything is fine.
The delay and low Trust levels will get better over the next few weeks as more and more Community Watch members update to SP2 and the files in question get added to the database as trusted.
Drop in any time. Please feel free to push the green button on the post that helped you the most, as that will help others with the same problem find the solution faster.
