NAV has no software firewall so it is safe to keep Vista firewall on.

I even suggets using aseperate firewall and disable the Vista firewall

thanks Stu. However, I have come to find out that NAV2008 internet Worm Protection is actually an inbound firewall and have been told by some Symantec peopel that there is no need for another firewall and in some cases having both on can cause conflict. Perhaps a Norton/Symantec staff can advise? I currently just have the NAV2008 inbound firewall on. My Norton 2008 AV security panel shows that I am firewall protected from inbound threats. When I look at the activity logs it does show that certain things are blocked

It seems like we’re looking at this situation as a “Can the product I have protect me?” and the answer is yes, but to a limited extent. While Norton AntiVirus 2008 has the inbound firewall Internet Worm Protection, if you wish to have a full firewall, then I’d recommend Norton Internet Security 2008 instead. As for the conflicts with Windows Firewall, there may be problems having both enabled, but it seems to me that the only reason you would have them both enabled is for extra security, right? Then why not get Norton Internet Security 2008? All roads seem to lead to NIS in this case.

To add to Tony's reply, it's true that both NAV and Vista have an inbound firewall, but as Tony mentioned, the outbound firewall from NIS 2008 is missing in NAV 2008 (to target threats such as bots, NIS 2008's outbound firewall runs a full SONAR heuristic scan when an unknown application attempts to communicate outside the PC).  Vista includes an outbound firewall, but it does not have any rules, so it allows all traffic by default, which does not provide protection to the average user.  Given that, I would recommend that NAV 2008 users go with the NAV firewall & disable the Vista or XP FW (XP FW is inbound only).

Thanks. Thats where I'm at:

Vista Firewall off

NAV2008 inbound mini-firewall on.

I can see from the logs that it blocks things from comining in

example- I get notification that Portscan intrusion attempt was detected and blocked

I also get notification in the activity log that says things like:

"unused port blocking has blocked inbound TCP communication, remote address *******"

So I know the inbound is working
