NAV2013 is "unable to open a browser"

I installed NAV2013 a week ago. It was working well for a few days. Then I got a variety of messages from Norton; e.g. one was that my Auto Protect wasn't ON; but I went to my settings and it said that it was ON. When I tried to go to the Help Indexes, I got the message "NAV is unable to open a browser." After a few tries, I got another message asking if I was sure I had a browser. I've tried to access Help with first AOL open and then with just plain old Internet Explorer, with the same messages popping up each time.

I am running MS XP Pro. Prior to NAV 2013, I had NAV 2012. I had no such problem with the 2012 version. I opted to install a new program rather than renew my virus definitions through the 2012 version, for financial reasons. [I'm living on a fixed income -- just SS -- so I have to try and make every penny count..] I did the same thing when my NAV 2011 was nearing its expiration, and installed the 2012 version pretty quickly and easily.

Another message I received was that my old NSW was interfering with the new NAV. So I followed the directions and clicked the uninstall button that Norton provided. I can't see that uninstalling NSW has done anything but make me very unhappy; I have always depended upon NSW to alert me when I need to take care of maintenance tasks -- e.g. clearing out images, etc; doing defrags; even reminding me to do a NAV scan on a regular basis. I want badly to re-install it, but I'm afraid to try it until all of these other problems are straightened out.

A final note: I am 70 years old and not thinking as clearly as I once was. I'm not particularly computer-savvy, so please try to give simple instructions that don't involve much in the way of computer-speak. Thank you for any help you can provide me.

Open Internet Explorer.

Go to: Tools > Internet Options > Programs.

Click the button to make IE the default browser. close IE.

Verify that the help screens now work.

If everything works, try making your "other" browser the default and see if it continues to work.

Hi Peter, Thanks for your response. I [with difficulty -- Support didn't want to open] went to Support-Get Support and ran Auto-Fix.  When it was done, it said that, if NAV was still misbehaving, I needed to go to the NAV website [It didn't tell me if they did or did not fix anything]. I did three Live Updates this morning, and have rebooted 3 times. Yes, I am using service pack 3. So far, no improvement with my problem, so I've going to move on to Dave's reply next.

If Dave's suggestion does not help, you may need to reinstall your NAV to get rid of a possibly corrupted installation. If you use the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool it should not be difficult for you.

Download the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrnr
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility.
Run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool.
Reboot.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.

The Identity Safe information is in case you had the stand alone Norton Toolbar installed.

Thanks, Dave, for your reply. I followed your directions. It DID say that IE was NOT my default browser, but it didn't say what was [Is AOL a browser? I know it's an ISP and that it uses IE. Could that have somehow been entered as my browser?] At any rate, your plan worked in that I'm no longer getting the "Unable to open a browser" message. But when I click on help, I'm redirected to the NAV web-site instead of getting that handy little index with an alphabetical list of subjects where I can learn a bit about what might be going on. Have I done something wrong and inadvertantly changed another setting? And is there a way to get my little self-help tool back?

Since I don't know what browser my computer was using, I hesitate to go back to that even to satisfy myself that the original problem has been taking care of.

And finally, do you think it's safe for me to re-install Norton SystemWorks on my PC now? I have both NAV 2013 and NSW [the last version made] installed on my lap top, and they are running together without difficulty.

Thanks again, Nancy

Nancy

I do support over on Compuserve which is owned by AOL. Compuserve has some old software of it's own that includes a lousy browser so if you are using Compuserve uninstall all of their software since you can better access their site using your own preferred browser although some of it (the reply editor) are tuned to IE and up to about 9 so Compatibility Mode is often desirable).

If you are using AOL as your ISP then I don't know what they supply but I access them when needed using IE under Windows XP - 7

Sounds like you are getting close to what you need.

I would go ahead and reinstal NSW. As long as things are working well now, the worst that would happen is you would have to uninstall NSW again.

Thats the help file now, everything has been moved online and we no longer get the "handy little index" and local help files.

But if you have questions or a problem just ask here and we should be able to help.

It looks as if Dave's suggestion has taken care of Norton's being unable to open a browser. Just in case, however, I clicked on the link to the Remove & Reinstall Tool and saved it to my Favorite Places.

I do have a question about your post. I had been wondering what Identity Safe was. An icon for it appeared on my desktop. Is it part of NAV, or is it something that I would have to pay extra for. And what is it for?

And while I'm into a questioning mood, is there anywhere on the Norton website where I can find [and print out?] the info that used to be covered in the glossy Owner's Manual that was incuded with the software. It seems as if its been years since I got one of those handbooks with the software, and if it were easier for me to navigate the website, I could undoubtedly find the information. But I find getting around on the web-site very difficult. These days it's just one Senior Moment after another.

Thanks again for your help.  Nancy

Hi again. I did reinstall NSW. It seems to be running all right. My computer has slowed down considerably however. I used NSW's WinDoctor Diagnostic tool, and the result I got was the following gobbledy-gook: " The key "CLSID\{1171A62F-0582-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}\InprocServer 32." refers to a missing file, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9c.ocx"

Is that a big or little problem? And is it something I can fix myself?   Nancy
