NBRT for WIN8?

I just discovered that NBRT won't load/run on my WIN 8.1 laptop.  The tech at Geeksquad showed me how to boot from the DVD.  But his Geeksquad CD wouldn't run either.  He showed me how to do a "system" image to DVD using the Toshiba utility but I don't trust 8.1 yet to believe it.  I haven't found the supposed 8.1 backup feature (yet)

I had to do a "refresh" and subsequently lost a lot of work.  I created a NBRT DVD iso and burned it to no avail.

I can't figure out the BIOS/EHFI(?) to verify anything.  Since I've trusted NBRT on my XP laptop:smileyembarrassed: (sigh) I wonder if there's a NBRT in the works for 8.1 or should I just stick my head back in the sand?

Thank you so much.

If your system is using UEFI you need to go into the BIOS and disable "secure boot".  Then the DVD needs to be booted in

non-UEFI mode.

Your system will have a key to press during the boot that gives you the systems boot menu.

Your DVD drive will be listed twice, once as UEFI and once as regular or legacy.

Select the listing for DVD drive that does not say UEFI

Dave

Thank you.  I'll try.

Hi, Rusty. I got this answer also from one of our other Gurus, PapauZ, who's on our Hungarian Forums as well.

I used NBRT and a Ghost SRD too with Win8.

By older machines you only need to go into the special booting options of Win8 in the Metro-settings, where you can set to restart the machine into "recovery mode" (or what is it called), and then enable the CD/USB-boot.

Or if the user have a newer machine, which has that specially secured "BIOS", they have to change first some options in it to enable normal booting first, and than can only a USB-boot done.

Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Pro x64 Hungarian, Norton 360 v21.2.0.38

Update.---- I am advised by Symantec the the NBRT IS compatible with Windows 8. The website will be updated.

Thank you.  I've found my computer BIOS (new Toshiba C55D-1 laptop)  does not support the Non_UEFIboot option (yet?).

I did this.  It didn't help.

Not available in my BIOS.  Someday.  :womansad: <me sticking my head back in the sand>

Thanks again.  I fear until the BIOS/UEFI issue is resolved  I'll not be able to boot from the DVD/ODD.  I had hoped the N360 guys could find a work-around.

Sorry  I got my replies mixed up thanking all Guru-types.  They're close together.

Hi, Rusty. The other info was from DaveH ! Is there no function in your BIOS for you to set the first boot option to boot from disc ?

Most systems can be set that way, and if there is no disc, then Windows looks for the next option.

Thanks.  That's what I'm finding too about the BIOS problem.  Can't find any fixes or work-arounds yet.

Oh yes (sort of) The BIOS says the HDD/ODD is the first boot device.  It just doesn't work.  I've tried all the tweaks I can find, but the option to boot from a non-EFHI drive.

Hi,

First please try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBG5YMMbnLU     (from 1:44)

If the methode above doesn't work, please go into your UEFI BIOS (You can reach it from Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> UEFI Firmware Settings), and change the settings from Secure Boot to Normal Boot / Legacy Mode.

Also in the BIOS change the Boot Order: 1st USB / CD, 2nd HDD. Than Save all the settings and restart the machine.

Put the USB/DVD into your machine, and wait until Norton is loaded.

Let us know the results.

I'll try those immediately!

To @PapauZ,

I watched the video and confirmed I was getting to the Boot options correctly.

Alas my UEFI BIOS in my Toshiba WIN8.1 laptop does not offer this feature yet.

Thanks again.

I confess.  @papuaZ you were right all along.  After pulling hair (not much left anyway) I finally explored every area hiding in the BIOS and discovered the esoteric changes needed.  I now have a NBRT DVD and thumb drive ready and able.  Getting my computer back to normal is a story in itself.

So again, my thanks to all you GURUs who live to help out-of-date "newbies" like me! :manembarrassed:
