I don't know about the 'need' but I would recommend protection for any device that can connect to the Internet in any manner.
The bad guys/gals are always looking for new places to infect and when they see unprotected devices anywhere they will want to leave their mark. It's all for fun and profit for them.

The Nook HD and HD+ have a web browser and e-mail. The Nook Simple Touch is just a reader for books, magazines, and newspapers. The content doesn't necessarily come only from Barnes & Noble. Some public libraries have e-books that can be downloaded to the Nook.
