Need help opening specific firewall port(s)

I recently got a new wirelese all-in-one printer scanner.  My home network is as follows:

2 desktops:  8300  = Win 7 Pro SP1 64bit         =  USB PC to printer  RJ45  router to PC) (NO wireless at all)

8250  = Win XP Pro SP3 32bit       =  Wireless  (printer to router);    RJ45 (router to PC)

2 laptops:     5010  = Win 7 Pro SP1 64bit          =  Wireless  (printer to router);   Wireless  (router to PC)

6000  = Win XP Home SP3 32bi  t=  Wireless  (printer to router);   Wireless  (router to PC)

ALL use the same version (up to date) NIS 2013

PC 8300 (Win 7) works fine with 7525  ( but it uses no wireless connections

PC 8250 (Win XP) cannot work with router via wireless connection  IF (and only if) the NIS firewall is on

PC 5010 (Win 7) works fine via wireless

PC 6000 (Win XP) works fine via wireless

HP has indicated that firewall port 9100 (and possibly others) needs to be open.

QUESTIONS:

  1. How do I verify if port 9100 is open ?
  2. How do I open port 9100 (and others) if not already open ?

Hi zaede,

First, make sure that the Network Trust Level and the trust level of the printer are set to "Shared" in the Norton Network Security Map on the XP machine.

The printer is set to 'Full Trust' per the Network Security Map --not sure where to 'see/set'  "SHARED".

As far as I an tell all Norton settings on both XP machines (as well as the W7 machines) are all the same.  But I don't know where/what to check regarding the specific port settings.

"Full Trust" will also work - or should.  If you have installed the printer program on the XP machine, you should not have to configure ports.

The supplied printer s/w was indeed installed on the XP machine (as it was on the other XP machine and the W7 machines --yet it does not work on the one XP machine.

Still looking for help with ensuring port 9100 is open.

Did some more digging and I did find how to change the Network Trust Level to SHARED.

Changing the network and printer to SHARED did solve the problem.  Thanks for your help.

Strange that FULL TRUST works on the other XP machine and the W7 machines.

Also would be interested in knowing what the functional differences are between 'SHARED' and 'FULL TRUST'.

Hi zaede,

Glad you got it working.  Either "Shared" or "Full Trust" should have worked.  "Shared" allows certain protocols used in local networking, such as UPnP, which makes it easier for devices on a network to find each other.  Other traffic is monitored with the same rules that are applied to incoming internet traffic.  "Full Trust" allows all traffic from other devices on your local network, and so is somewhat less safe - you want to make sure that no infected computers are on your network.
