Need help removing files and registry entries leftover after removing nis2011, using removal tool

Hi, I ran Norton Removal tool to remove nis2011 and it did fairly well. There is still a folder called Norton Support with files, dll’s etc and a subfolder in it. Can someone here at Norton please show me how to remove that properly. Also, I scanned for registry problems using ccleaner and there are a bunch of norton and symantec entries that came up as issues/problems. I would like help with how to remove those as well. I have very little technical skills to know how and what to do, and I know enough not to mess with registry entries myself. Thank you so much! (My first post didn’t show in the forums, so this is my second…Sorry if winds up to be two.)

Hello casey84,

By design, the NRT leaves some files behind in case you wish to re-install your product.  A complete removal would encompass first uninstalling via Add-Remove Programs or Program & Features followed by the NRT.

At this point you can perform a search of your computer for any Symantec / Norton folders and files and delete them.

May I ask which security program you will be installing?

Hi Phil! Thanks for your reply. One of Norton’s helps regarding uninstalling said to run the tool alone. Another said to use add/remove first, then the tool. I should have written here and asked. I thought I did my homework and made sure I was looking at current year posts. So, the way I uninstalled was using the norton removal tool. You wrote that I could do a search for Symantec and Norton files and delete them. I just want to verify that that would be okay to do? It won’t cause any instability? On the registry entries; is there anything can be done about those? Thanks!

It's fine to delete the Symantec/Norton folders after uninstallations.

As for registry items, you can let CCleaner "Fix" them. It doesn't remove anything that is needed.

Hello casey84

Please be aware that while you are doing all this cleaning up, you will be unprotected by any security program, so I would recommend that you put on the windows firewall at least if that isn't on already. You should keep that computer off the net until you are ready to activate your security program.

I assume since you want every thing removed having to do with Norton and Symantec that you are going to another company's security program. I do hope you have that other security program all ready on desktop to install it and activate it.Thanks.

Hi Bombastus! I let ccleaner fix the individual registry items it found and that went okay. I saw in the forums where you helped another with hidden files. http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NIS-2011-gives-incorrect-information-to-Windows-even-after-it/td-p/492206 I have windows vista and following the way to view these files wasn’t there for me. Can you show me how to view to find out if I have further hidden files/drivers? Thanks… Thank you both so much! I am now almost ready to install the antivirus program!

Hi Flopot! Thank you so much for yours and everyone’s help here. I sure appreciate you letting me know I need a firewall and virus protection immediately. I did replace the firewall right away, but just am waiting for the last steps here in this thread to be sure all traces are gone before I install the other program. Norton has always worked well on my system. I just couldn’t afford the renewal. I did get pretty troubled to know that when the product expired, it would stop working. I think that was the major axe in it all. Mainly the firewall bit. I understandy the why’s behind all that, but it just didn’t sit right. Thanks again for your support and help here. Blessings!

Hello! What wasn't there? That method should work on both Vista and Windows 7.

Hello Casey

You do know that you can buy NIS any where they have a good sale or even a previous year's version and just use the key to activate NIS 2011. If you buy it online, just make sure to go to a reputable place and all you would need from the downloaded version is the new key. We can give you the newest link for NIS 2011. Thanks.
