Netflix error message states/request me to turn off

netflix is giving me error message while using vpn wants me to disconnect is there a way to keep vpn on but hidden???

Disclaimer: Circumventing Netflix’s geo-restrictions is a violation of its terms of service. While it is generally not illegal, using a VPN for this purpose comes with the risk of receiving an error message and being unable to stream.

Netflix blocks VPNs to enforce its regional content licensing agreements, which dictate what shows and movies can be made available in different countries. By preventing VPN use, Netflix ensures it complies with the terms set by the studios and distributors from whom it licenses content.

Why content varies by region
The main reason for geo-blocking is the complex nature of content licensing.

  • Regional rights: Studios often sell streaming rights for a movie or TV series on a country-by-country basis. For example, a TV show licensed to Netflix in the U.S. might be licensed to a different streaming service, or even a local broadcast network, in the U.K..
  • Varying costs: The cost to license content for a territory varies depending on the size of the audience. A global license would be far more expensive and complex to obtain.
  • Avoiding legal issues: If Netflix were to show content in a region where it does not hold the proper rights, it would be in breach of its licensing contracts. This could lead to legal action and the loss of its rights to that content, damaging its business relationships.

How Netflix detects VPNs
To enforce these restrictions, Netflix has developed sophisticated methods for detecting VPN traffic.

  • IP address blacklists: The simplest method is to maintain a continuously updated list of IP addresses that belong to commercial VPN services. When many users connect from the same IP address—which is common for VPN servers—Netflix flags it as non-residential and blocks it.
  • Traffic analysis: Netflix can analyze traffic patterns for anomalies. For example, if a user’s IP address appears to jump between different countries in a very short period, the system may flag this as a potential VPN and block access.
  • Mismatched information: Netflix can compare the location associated with your IP address with other data points, like your account’s registered country. A discrepancy can lead to a VPN-related error message.

What happens if you get caught
Using a VPN to bypass geographical restrictions is a violation of Netflix’s terms of service. However, the consequences are generally mild for the user. Instead of banning your account, Netflix typically displays a proxy error message that prevents you from streaming content. Once you disconnect your VPN, access to your normal content library is restored.

When Netflix detects you are using a VPN, it will often display an error message requesting that you turn it off. This happens because streaming companies have content licensing agreements that differ by region, and VPNs can mask your true location, violating those terms.

Even though you are paying for both Netflix and Norton 360, Netflix actively blocks many VPNs, and the one included with Norton 360 is frequently detected.

How to fix the issue

  1. Turn off your VPN completely

This is the most direct solution, as Netflix will work normally once your connection is no longer being routed through the Norton VPN.

  1. Open the Norton 360 application.

  2. Navigate to the Secure VPN section.

  3. Click the toggle to turn the VPN off.

  4. Restart the Netflix app or refresh the page in your browser.

  5. Use the split tunneling feature

If you want to keep the VPN on for other apps but allow Netflix to connect directly, you can use Norton’s “split tunneling” feature.

  1. Open Norton 360.

  2. In the Secure VPN section, go to Settings.

  3. Find and enable Split Tunnel.

  4. Add the Netflix application (or your web browser if you use that for Netflix) to the list of apps that are excluded from the VPN traffic.

  5. Change your VPN server location

Netflix’s ability to detect a VPN varies by server, so simply switching the location you are connected to can sometimes bypass the block.

  1. Open the Norton 360 app and go to the Secure VPN settings.

  2. Tap Change Location.

  3. Select a different country or city from the list.

  4. Relaunch Netflix to see if the error is gone.

  5. Try basic troubleshooting steps

If the problem continues, there could be residual network data causing the issue.

  • Clear your browser cache and cookies if you’re watching on a computer.
  • Restart your device (computer, phone, or smart TV) and your modem or router.
  1. Confirm your VPN is off

If the error persists even after turning off the VPN, you can check your connection to be certain.

  1. On any device connected to your network, go to fast.com in a web browser.
  2. When the test is complete, click Show more info.
  3. Check the country next to the “Client” entry. If it doesn’t match your actual location, the VPN is still active somewhere on your network.
