Network printer / scanner operations partly blocke by the Norton smart firewall

I have a wireless Epson multifunktional printer operated via my home (private) network.
I can scan a document operated by the Epson software from my computer and the scanned document will be stored on my lapt.

I can also do a scan on the printer itself and choose my laptop and the document should be sent through the wireless network connection to my laptop to store it.

On the printer display I can see my computer and select it as the address to send the scan too, but as a start the scan operation, after a while there is an error message on the printer display that saying the computer is not connected.
The strange thing is that a can operate the scanner / printer in my network from the cumpeter and received the scan document back on my computer, but I cannet start the scan on my printer/scanner itself and get the document send to my computer.
The rigth Epson software is installed, the testrapport of the printer says that the network connection is okay, but it does not work.

I think that the Norton smart firewall blocks the printer to start the operation.
help file of Norton is useless, because steps shown by the Norton helpfile does not correspond with my Norton program.

How can I get the smart firewall not to block traffic from and to my laptop both connected in the same home network?

Operation system: Windows 11 Home 64 bit

Unfortunately Norton does not offer me to post enclusures to this community topic. (Why not!!)

To test if it is the Norton firewall causing the issue, you can temporarily disable the firewall. Right click on the Norton icon in your system tray and click on Disable Smart Firewall. Choose an appropriate time frame and test sending a scan from the printer. If you are still not getting the scan to go to the computer, it is not the firewall.

Norton is the cause of the problem because as soon as de-activated the Norton firewall the wifi internet opens as it should. Edge in and out is allowed in the Norton firewall settings. I throw a party when my Norton subscription ends. Never did I see a antivirus program that constantly shoots offers to buy extra modules, they should give the users a decent support. The support desk themself do not know how the program works if you call them

Re reading your first post, I think that the problem might be that the Norton firewall expects the printer to be accessed from a computer. Not the computer being accessed by the printer. Sounds like you need to look at the firewall rules for your printer to allow in and out connections. I’m not familiar with how to do this, but there should be others here that have created firewall rules.

i was facing similar issue but a restart fixed the problem

@JCJvan_t_Hoff When scanning a doc directly on the printer itself, have you changed WHERE you want that document to be sent/saved? Also have a look at these settings in Norton for a possible answer:
*Note: If there are not any entries in your Norton history where printing was blocked the firewall isn’t the issue. We will have to look at other things to determine what.

Thanks for all the help, but nothing works.
I see the laptop on my printer functions panel but if I select the laptop and start the scan there appear an errot message that I have to check my network settings or firewall.

I do not think that it is Norton anymore, because I adjusted the settings as adviced: no result and then temporarily switched off the firewall and auto protect: no result.

I do not have a clue where to start looking. It is a very uncomfortable situation because the printer / scanner is in another room then my desk, so a one-way connection is not functional. Going back and forward to scan document to store on the laptop.
The Epson helpdesk only advice is to uninstall and re-install the drivers and software, which I did without result about 10 times now.

So, if somebody has a Eureka idea I would be thankful.

@JCJvan_t_Hoff Did this issue begin with a recent Windows update? Anything alerted where local host 127.0.0.1 is blocked? Here is my reasoning for asking:

Indeed, something is working backwards with your setup, I wouldn’t think Norton is blocking unless there are entries in history to back that up.

Thanks for your help.
It is since my new Laptop with windows 11 on it. The old one had windows 10 and worked perfectly als a two-way street for scanning (scan command and storing via my laptop and scanning via my multi printer + automatically storing on my laptop).

After months of trouble shooting via the Epson support desk and testing the fact for sure that it is not Norton 360, it must be a setting under Windows 11, or windows 11 basically does not support this kind of hosting (???)

What is the model of your printer? I would like to have a look at what it can do and cannot do just to review it.

Edited: Forgot to ask if Epson support went through these test steps with you regarding Windows 11?

Thank you for the support offered.
It is an Epson Expression Premium XP-7100 (multifunctional printer: scannen, printing, copier).
Integrated in a WiFi Privat network.
Previously without any problem used with a Windows 10 Laptop.

The problem started after using my new MSI - laptop with OS Windows 11 home 64 bit.

I do not know whether Epson helpdesk executed Windows 11 tests.
The firmware and software I did download and installed several times, is under the Expression Premium XP-7100 support page, offered as for use with OS Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Fact is that I see my MSI laptop on the display of my XP-7100 listed under the “scan to computer” option.
However, if used the scanning starts but ends after a while without executing the scan operation with the error message to check the connection and software on its display.

It is also strange that this action also provokes an error message on my MSI Laptop stating that I have to check my firewall and / or antivirus software settings. So, this error massage on my laptop proves that there is a two-way wireless connection, but something blocks the scan operation and wireless transport of the scan document.
Printing and scanning commands started on my laptop are executed without a problem.
I do not think that the problem with latest updates is causing it, because my problem is since I installed my new laptop about one year ago.

I have the printer listed in the firewall exceptions.
Also if I de-activate the Norton 360 Firewall and auto-protect option, the same error message as mentioned appears on my laptop.
Epson keeps advising to un-install and a new clean install, which I did several times as per Epson procedure, without any change.

This is a very problem situation because the printer is in another room.

I now store the scans on a usb stick to transport to my laptop for storing.

I have been having a similar but different issue, but this might help you:

Norton was blocking network connections, but like you I tried looking in the firewall, but there are no settings there.

What I needed to do was allow it through the “Intrusion Prevention” where the “Blocked Connections” settings and records are:

  1. Go to Settings in the Left Menu
  2. Go to Features (should open on this tab in settings)
  3. Scroll down to the Security section, and you should find “Intrusion Prevention” and click into it
  4. In “Intrusion Prevention” go to the “Connection Attempts” tab and see the connections that Norton has blocked, this should be the recent ones. Norton gives a notification when it does these type of connection blocks in the bottom right corner of your screen
  5. If Norton is blocking your connections, write down the IP of the connection you want to allow through (the application doesn’t let you copy)
  6. Go to the next tab “Exclusions”, and “Add” the IP to be exempt (the one you wrote down)
  7. This should allow the connection through.

For some reason this is not in the Firewall section and isn’t linked there.

For context: I was trying to allow a wired printer to be shared over my local network, but having credential issues norton blocked it and wouldn’t allow it to connect after a few failed attempts.

@JCJvan_t_Hoff What is your status with the printer issue?
