Well I think that's what I describing! At least for me in Windows 7 that was what has happened and did yesterday.
I'll check my settings when I've a moment.
doesn't the flash player update automatically as a function of Internet Explorer now?
I don't do this for all stuff on the computer but for Flash Player I have the Automatic Feature set to ON.
It's civilized since it first pops a small pop up that there is a flash player update and if you click on it it puts up a frame with the details and you can select to Install. That puts up the usual screens -- WATCH for any additional prechecked INSTALL (I think mine was Google toolbar) and uncheck unless you want it -- and you have to instruct it. And then I think you get install progress bar and finish.
So I regard that as one of the safer and more civilized automatic update settings since Adobe Player is regarded as so "accident prone".
FWIW
A way I have been able to get adobe flash player updates has been, open Control Panel, open the FlashPlayer item, open the Update tab, click on the button "Check for Updates". Default web browser opens to an adobe page and when fully loaded, there is a rectangular box telling you if you have an out-dated version or if you have current version. Then there is some link or button to get the currently needed Adobe Flash Player update. From there, follow instructions, and be sure to remove check mark for any included item that you not want, such as any toolbars or other security-protection-checking tools.
Once in a while, the download does not work, and I need to download an installer file for the flash player.
