Release Notes
v5.44.6575 (26 Jun 2018)
- Internet Explorer cookies are now cleaned from the INetCache folder in Windows 10
- Fixed a bug causing cleaning incompatibility with Firefox Malwarebytes extension
- Added reminders for expired CCleaner Professional subscriptions
My focus was probably only on how to retain persistent login cookies.
Hi bjm_:
I found the Wise Disk Cleaner v9 interface for creating cookie exceptions at Menu | Settings | Exceptions | Add Cookies isn't very user friendly since you can't pick cookies you want to exclude out of a pick list (you have to manually enter the domain name), but if Privacy Eraser v4 can't display detailed lists of files and registry items the scan has flagged for removal that's a major shortcoming for me. It also doesn't appear that Privacy Eraser has its own user forum, which is another big negative for me.
bjm_:
Um, what CCleaner check boxes for "run a disk clean?
AFAIK my restore points are being wiped after I run a "standard" disk clean from the Cleaner button regardless of what items are selected for removal. The restore points aren't wiped immediately after the disk clean - I have to wait for my OS to create a new restore point (which is automatically scheduled once a day on my Vista SP2 OS) after CCleaner is run and that's when the volsnap error occurs and all my restore points disappear.
According to the feedback I've gotten in the Piriform forum there's no check box on the Windows or Applications tabs of CCleaner's "standard" disk cleaner (including the advanced Wipe Free Space setting) that should wipe restore points if enabled. I know there's a way to remove older restore points with CCleaner at Tools | System Restore but I'm not using that feature.
Edit: have you tried Glary Utilities...for example.
I tried Glary Utilities years ago before I switched to CCleaner but it might be worth another look.
Wise Disk Cleaner seems fairly easy to use (although it's a bit bloated with features I don't want the like the bundled disk defragmenter and system optimizer) and if I ever need a registry cleaner (which I only use on occasion to look for orphaned files and registry entries after I uninstall a software program) then Wise has a standalone registry cleaner I plan to test.

Hmm, do not recall...probably did not try Portable.... so, just now PE Portable (64bit) run.
My focus was probably only on how to retain persistent login cookies.
Yes, I'm not finding how to show itemized list of items flagged for removal.
I'm not certain yet but it appears that CCleaner Portable v5.44 is wiping every system restore point off my 32-bit Vista SP2 computer whenever I run a disk clean.

I run CCleaner for some and Glary Utilities for some. And sometimes vice versa.
Yeah, may be time. I've looked at Wise Disk Cleaner and Privacy Eraser. My CCleaner alternative (if and when) may be Privacy Eraser.
Hi bjm_:
I'm not certain yet but it appears that CCleaner Portable v5.44 is wiping every system restore point off my 32-bit Vista SP2 computer whenever I run a disk clean. My test results are summarized in my 11-Jul-2018 post in sethm1's CCleaner bug report System Restore Points are Missing.
While I'm waiting an Avast/Piriform employee to respond in sethm1's thread (I'm not holding my breath ) I've decided to test Wise Disk Cleaner Portable v9.7.6 and Privacy Eraser Portable v4.38.3 as possible replacements for CCleaner Portable. When you were testing Privacy Eraser did you find a way to display a detailed list of individual files and registry entries that will be cleaned after a Privacy Eraser scan? When I expand each main section in the summary of my scan results Privacy Eraser displays a total count of items that will be cleaned and the amount of disk space that will be recovered (see image below) but I can't figure out if there's a setting I can change to show an itemized list of files and/or registry entries that are flagged for removal.

And now in the latest version of the software, CCleaner 5.44, there’s an annoying popup Summer Sale message. It’s a one-time ad, although as Techdows points out, if you remove cookies set by CCleaner, you will see the messages again.
As Avast itself explains: We will be using the dynamic messaging system extensively in future releases to help us run tests for the UI. Just be aware that if you clean these cookies you will see certain messages with much greater frequency than if the cookie was there. For this reason these cookies have been whitelisted by default. You can manage this in the 'Cookies to Keep' list of the Options > Cookies menu.
It's clear from what's said in the quote above that Avast plans to push more advertising messages to users in the future, and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see Avast Antivirus bundled with CCleaner again at some point. Ultimately, Avast is a business looking to make money, and to recoup the outlay it spent on buying Piriform, but plenty of users are unhappy with the direction their favorite cleaning tool is taking and it's easy to see why.
Cheers, I posted the link to Martin Brinkmann's ghacks.net article in the CCleaner thread Intrusive CCleaner Pop-up so others are aware of the firewall access block you suggested.
I also did a bit of reading about the Privacy Eraser utility you mentioned <here> and it looks like another good candidate to replace CCleaner.

There is no option in the program to disable the advertising popup. In fact, there is no option at all to prevent this kind of behavior. What you can do is block CCleaner's Internet access. If you disallow the program to connect to the Internet. for example with TinyWall or Windows Firewall Control, it seems that you won't get the advertising popup.
Do you mean going to Settings | Firewall | Program Control and changing the access for my CCleaner executable from Allow to Blocked to prevent both outbound and inbound traffic through my Norton Smart Firewall?
My CCleaner (Standard installer) as far as I know does not need to call home.
Unless, maybe you want their (if needed) security fix, which I do not.
I update (over-install) CCleaner new version, out of habit. I'll clear out installed files I do not need and confirm outbound is blocked.
I've been using CCleaner for over a decade now but perhaps it's time for me to test the Wise Disk Cleaner that F 4 E recommends.
FWIW ~ re: 5.44.6575 Standard installer. I've not seen popup with CCleaner outbound connection blocked. CCleaner outbound connection blocked since before 5.44.

I read your comments about deleting persistent CCleaner cookies at Option | Cookies | Cookies to Keep, tweaking Norton firewall rules, etc. last month in ALF60's thread CCleaner Standard 5.43.6520. I create a new folder on my USB thumb drive every time I unzip a new CCleaner Portable version (e.g., F:\Portable\CCleaner 5_44\) and copy over my old ccleaner.ini file so that I don't overwrite the previous version until I'm sure the new version doesn't have any serious bugs, so the path to my executable (and my default firewall rule) changes every time I update. I don't have to change the path after every update but I also don't think it should be necessary for me to do all this tweaking to stop the intrusive behaviour CCleaner has started exhibiting since Avast bought out Piriform - especially with the portable version. I've been using CCleaner for over a decade now but perhaps it's time for me to test the Wise Disk Cleaner that F 4 E recommends - the online help at http://free-disk-cleaner.wisecleaner.com/help/ shows that creating cookie exclusions (a feature I want) is relatively simple.

CCleaner outbound connection blocked since before 5.44.
See nukecad's thread Intrusive CCleaner Pop-up about ads that pop up in the system tray when CCleaner v5.44 is launched. I updated to CCleaner Portable v5.44 today and even the portable version has these pop-up ads.
Yet another nail in the coffin for CCleaner Free since Avast purchased Piriform and turned one of the best free Windows utilities into another piece of crapware .

Thanks you so much for this update. Please do share updates on other also. I have checked CCcleaner's official website. It says "A new version, 5.44.6575 is available" with all security features.
