New Computer--Any Win XP vs. Win 7 issues?

Hi there,

We just bought a new computer, and I'm wondering how to get Norton 360 up and running (we still have 2 remaining activations). We purchased 360 back in 2008 and renew it every year, but that was for a machine running Windows XP, the new one will be running Windows 7. Our version of 360 is v3.8, and it expires March, 2011. How do I install Norton 360 on our new computer?

Thanks,

SlowRain

Hi,

You can download and install Norton 360 version 4.0. Since you have a valid subscription for your 3.8 version, you are eligible for the free update to the latest version. depending on the flavor of your Norton 360, download from:

Norton 360 Version 4.0 (Standard)

http://www.norton.com/n360s_4

Norton 360 Version 4.0 Premier.

http://www.norton.com/n360p_4

After you download and install the Norton product, activate it using your Product Key

HI SlowRain,

Please be sure to update N360 on the computer in which it is already installed as well. If everything is working properly with it, you can update over the top of the current one without having to uninstall it first.

Also, be sure to run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports no more updates are found. This applies both to updating of the current one as well as installing N360 on the second computer.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hello SlowRain

I just wanted to let you know that the current version is 4.2.0.12. This last update requires you to run live update to receive the update. Some times you have to run live update several times for that version to come thru and sometimes it will require a reboot to get it to come thru live update. Thanks.

SlowRain,

One point to bear in mind -- it's not related to Norton -- is that Windows 7 does not use Outlook Express for email so you will have to look for another email client unless you use webmail.

Any Norton AntiSpam may not work or work differently according to the email client you choose.

I'm not sure that every feature of N360 will work if you have a 64 bit version of WIndows 7 which so many new computers are being delivered with nowadays unless you go into the business range from firms like HP or Lenovo where I know you can find the 32 bit version of Windows 7 preinstalled.

Also nothing to do with Norton but if you are moving to a 64 bit version of Windows 7 there are some gotchas on getting older hard ware to work with it, like printers or scanners and you need to check the manufacturer to see if they have 64 bit drivers otherwise they won't work or may only have limited functions if there is a driver already in Windows 7 64 bit when you install it. This is much less of a problem or no problem at all if you get a 32 bit version of Windows 7.

Hugh

Thank you very much, everyone. It's unlikely we'll keep using this one as we have no room for it and it's a bit problematic right now. I don't use Outlook for email, just web-based email. The new one will be Win 7, 32 bit.

I'll let you know how it goes.

HI SlowRain,

Thanks very much for the update. We will be looking forward to how things goes. :smileyhappy:

Best wishes.

Hello SlowRain

If you are not going to be using the computer which has XP on it,  you can uninstall N360 from that computer using add/remove and the Norton Removal Tool. After you remove it from the unused computer, you will have another install to use again. So you would still have 2 more installs left to use after setting up your new computer.

If you want to remove N360 from the old, unused computer, here is a link for the Norton Removal Tool.

You can download the Norton Removal tool from
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN

Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, so back up Identity Safe using the program to back that up. Also please have your product key handy.

Thank you Allen for new link

That brings up another point. If you use Identity Safe on the old computer, I think you can save that file and then use it on the new computer. I'm not sure about this though since it's 2 different operating systems.  If it's possible to do, it would have to be saved before you delete the program.  You better wait for that answer from someone else since I don't know if that would work or not. It's a thing to consider though if you use the Identity safe part.

Hi SlowRain,

Yes you can use the Identity Safe file on the new computer.

To back up identity safe go to Web Settings > Identity Safe > Back up Identify Safe Data > Configure. There you can choose a path to back it up to and a password if desired. You should probably save to an external USB hard drive or USB flash drive.

The restore Identity Safe Data option is in that same section.

This should work fine on your new computer.

Best wishes.

Hello SlowRain

This thread will show you how to transfer the identity safe with a screen shot also and another suggestion from a Symantec Employee (name in Red). in addition to what Allen has said.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Transferring-logins-to-another-computer/m-p/269467#M35414

Screen shot may be helpful thanks to mdturner's screen shot in that thread.

Hi Floplot,

Mdturner is attempting to confirm that part about not being able to import ID safe data onto the new system. I think there may have been some confusion about merging two ID safe databases into one which cannot be done, vs simply restoring an ID safe data file.

But if all you are doing is restoring ID safe data and not importing it should be very straight forward. In fact I performed this test restoring ID safe data from my NIS 2010 (desktop) to my laptop running NIS 2011 and it worked with no problems at all.

Restoring of course completely replaces the current ID safe data. When the OP in the other thread asked about "importing" I think there may have been a misunderstanding about what the intended goal was.

Just wanted to mention this so there would not be any confusion about importing vs restoring and whether it can be done. :smileywink:

Thank you, everyone, for your help. The install went well. I'll use that uninstall tool a little later in the week when I'm sure I have everything I need off of the old computer.

Hello SlowRain

Thank you for coming back and giving us an update. Glad that everything has gone well for you with the install on Win 7.

Just a reminder.

Do remember to take a backup of your identity safe data into a .NPM file before you uninstall Norton from your old computer. So that it can be used to restore all your saved logins, cardss and notes into your new computer. We tend to forget this simple yet valuable step, before uninstall. So jus thought of insisting it once more.

The uninstall on the old machine (I used the removal tool linked to in a previous post in this thread) seems to have worked, but my Norton account still says I only have 1 license remaining. So, somehow, the uninstall on my old machine didn't update my Norton account. What do I do now?

Hi SlowRain,

If you ran the removal tool without first uninstalling N360 in the conventional manner, then the Symnantec server was probably not notified and hence did not subtract that computer off of the number of licenses used.

However this is easily solved. Please contact Customer Service and explain what happened. They will make adjustments to your account so that it will reflect the correct number of licenses remaining.

Pllease let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks, Allen. I contacted Customer Service and they fixed it easily enough. One small little issue that needs to be resolved, but otherwise everything's back to normal.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi SlowRain,

Thanks for the update. You mentioned one other small issue.  Is there anything else we can assist with?

Best wishes.
