New HP Wireless All-In-One Printer Connection Issues

I currently have two computers both running Windows XP Prp SP3.  One computer is connected to my wireless printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 A909g All-In-One series) via the adhoc option.  It prints flawlessly and is using Internet Security 2008.  The other XP Pro machine was hooked up to the printer via USB.  Since I am running out of USB ports with this particular printer, I wanted to just connect to the adhoc option.

When I go through the HP Wizard it can recognize the printer but it cannot connect to it.  I have opened the inbound and outpound ports in Internet Security and made sure they are opened in the Window's Firewall option as well.  Unfortuntely I cannot connect to the printer. I've even had HP's support attempt to walk me through connecting without any positive results.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tutorials I can use to get this printer set up?

Thank you in advance!

Hi ninamorena,

Welcome to Norton Community!

Are you able to connect after you disable the Smart Firewall?

Check whether the printer is shown in your Network Security Map and set it to Full trust.

Have they reconfigured the HP software to tell it that the connection is now wireless and not USB?

That is what we are attempting to do.  We would like to move the printer to another area in the office so it is not connected to the pc using usb but use adhoc instead.

Hi ninamorena,

I first wanted to double check that you are also using NIS 2008 on the machine having difficulty connecting wirelessly. I know you mentioned this was the case for your other machine but you didn't mention what the second machine was using (and I didn't want to assume).

I'd suggest you try the following (only because you're having these issues):

1. Uninstall the HP printer software

2. Delete the HP Printer in Start-->Settings-->Printers (both old and new)

3. Reinstall the HP printer software using the exact same procedure you used on the other system that is working via wireless connection

If you still can't connect, please let us know specifically what happens when step 3 fails. This might be unrelated to NIS but it would help to determine this.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi there, I've just purchsed a new C4500. I have tried to install it on my Samsung NC10 Netbook (running XP Pro) and I'm getting the following network function message Unable to communicate with your printer at this time. This may be caused by a firewall. If you are using firewall software, verify UDP port 247 is unblocked from your printer at xxx.xxx.x.xx (i.p address) to your PC There is also a similar message about TCP port 9100 from PC to printer having the same problem I have Windows Firewall disabled, but am running Norton Internet Security. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated  Thanks!

I have tried disabling the firewall to no avail.  I have to uninstall Norton and reinstall the printer software.  Once that is done and I reinstall Norton i am able to use the printer however, after any reboot my pc asks me to insert the printer software disc in order to reinstall.  I don't want to run without a firewall and having to reinstall every time I want to print is by no means ideal!

Hi Shadwell,

Welcome to the community!

Can you let us know the version of Norton Internet Security that is installed on your computer?

Thanks,

Hi Tom,

Thanks for replying, I am running 2008 with downloaded updates.

Hope you can help.

Hi Shadwell,

I have a few questions for you:

1. Are you attempting to connect to the printer from the netbook via wired or wireless connection?

2. It appears you are able to use the printer along with NIS 2008 only after uninstalling NIS and reinstalling both the printer software and NIS? Is this correct? At this point if you reboot your system, the printer software comes up and asks you to reinstall the printer software.

You mentioned that disabling the NIS firewall did not resolve the issue as you still could not print. This leads me to believe the connection is not being blocked by NIS. This holds true when you said the printer works after a reinstall of both the printer software and NIS. I suspect the issue is related to the printer's software or configuration. I don't know why the printer software is continuing to prompt a reinstall however, at this point I'd strongly suggest you do some research in the HP printer forum (it one exists) or HP's tech support page. Perhaps someone else has run into this before who may be able to assist you. If NIS were blocking the communication between your netbook and the printer, disabling the NIS firewall would have resulted in the communication being let through.

I hope this helps a bit,

Matt

Mattp suggests researching in an HP Forum if there is one -- I'm not sure if there is but Compuserve has a very good PCHardware and also two Windows Support Forums where I've seen a lot of printer networking problems sorted out.

I was very impressed the other day with WIN 7 on a new PC that I have on my home network to Have "Find a printer" and when I clicked on it it went out on my LAN and found the two printers attached to the other PC and then explain to me that "it would have to go to the other PC and fetch a driver -- was that OK?" !

I haven't read up the thread but I know from the Compuserve forums that one of the questions is whether the printer is connected by ethernet to the LAN directly or via a wired or wireless connection to another PC on the LAN, as mine is.

Hi Mattp

Answer 1. I am trying to connect via wireless.

Answer 2. Correct.

I have tried the HP forum and guess what, they say it's an HP problem!.

Mattp,

On an aside,

I've even tried adding the printer to the norton home network with the full trust option to no avail.

Phil

Hi Shadwell,

If I understood the issue right, at this point you are able to print wirelessly with NIS installed (and it's firewall enabled) however, when you reboot, the printer software requests a reinstall. If this is the case, the NIS firewall isn't blocking any printer communication as it is working.

Unfortunately I can't explain why HP's software wants to reinstall itself. This is why I suggested looking on other forums (perhaps HP's if they have one).

Thanks,

Matt

It would help me help others to know if they say what the HP problem is -- or are they just saying that it is a known problem with no solution yet?

If you have the URL to a message there on this I'd be interested to read it.

TIA

PS

Reading Matt's latest message triggers the memory -- I have a lot of HP stuff and used to be on the Team HP on Compuserve when they had their forum tehre -- that for some HP printers there is a specific fix available and listed if you go to the printer support page for Downloads and navigate to the OS you are using and then scan down the list.

I can't find an example of this but if I come across one I'll post it but if you have not done so already try checking this for your printer.

I had had a similar problem with a printer of a girlfriend of mine, a C4380.

Wireless connection did not work properly with original software on the CD which came with the printer, so we had it connected via USB, which worked reasonably well, although sometimes asking for the CD also.

There was no new release at that moment and the HP forums are/were full of those connection problems, also the problem asking for the CD everytime after startup.

Beginning this year HP released a new version of the software, which should solve most of the problems with connections and the CD-problem. And it did.

However, the HP software is very complicated and not always easy to install/de-install. And by installing everytime, it creates a lot of rubbish. On one PC i could de-install properly, on the other one I had to reinstall Windows, which was necessary anyway.

First of all : download and install NIS 2009. With the NIS 2008 licensekey you are entitled to NIS 2009 too.

De-install NIS 2008 first via add programs and then with the Norton removal tool. This makes it a lot easier. NIS 2008 seemed to give more troubles in the firewall adjustment, especially the port definitions, which are not necessary anymore in NIS 2009.

Then download the latest release of the HP-software for your printer from the HP site . You have to select the full-feature version (about 150MB or more). However, do not install ituntill i come up with the (de-)install procedure.

I have to lookup the de-install and install procedure I used, from special de-install up to firewall settings.

Tomorrow i will come up with that procedure here.

Grtz. Hugo

I have this same problem with Norton 360 Premiere Edition. I cannot wirelessly connect to my HP 8500 AIO printer.   Frankly, I’m just about fed up with the Norton products.  With almost every new product (hardware or software) that I buy, Norton causes problems.  Over the years I’ve needed to upgrade on several occasions just to get something else to work.  Unless there is a quick fix for this problem, I’m done with Norton.

To add to my previous email, I found this link on the HP forum.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=uk&docname=c01536437

This page provides info on how to reconfigure NIS to allow the HP printer to work.  Can someone provide the same information for how to make this work with Norton 360?

Thanks.

Thanks for finding that.

BTW to everyone this is not a Norton Specific problem -- see

HP All-in-One Products - Cannot Transfer Image Files From a Memory Card or Use the 'Scan To' Function Over the Network with Windows XP Service Pack 2 Installed
Issue
Windows XP Service Pack 2 enables the firewall security feature that puts up a "wall" between an HP device and a computer on the network. In order to transfer image files or use the scan to function from the front panel, you must add the HP software to the Exception list so the firewall allows the necessary data to pass though.
or this from another article on the HP site:
Step three: Temporarily disable the firewall
Firewalls from third-party firewall vendors, such as Symantec, McAfee, or ZoneAlarm, can prevent the HP software from successfully installing over a network connection. Follow these steps to turn off any third party firewalls temporarily.
