You need to check Settings > General tab and scroll down to Remote Management. Be sure that is turned on. It is not instantaneous that you will see the device in your Account. Check back the next day.
@peterweb Thank you for your response and instructions. Norton wants an “Authorization” password when I choose “Settings”. I’ve been having this problem for awhile with this and other notices, and we haven’t found a fix yet. I can send you a copy of a photo of the notice if you’d like to see it. I don’t see a prompt here.
The authorization password is the Windows Administrator password. Norton requires you are logged in using a Windows admin account, or you have to enter the admin user password to access Settings. This helps protect the Norton product from unauthorized changes to the settings.
@peterweb Thank you for your reply and information. I’ll look into this. I didn’t know there was a Windows Administrator log in, so I’ll have to work on that.
@kare2k Here is some good information regarding account types, their restrictions and how to see what the current permissions level is for the account you are using.
Everything I check shows me as Administrator. Windows 10 was on this laptop when I purchased it, so I didn’t set that up, therefore, I have no idea how a password got there. I guess I could look up my set up notes to see if I have just forgotten it. Also, I remembered that Windows 10 had to be reinstalled in June 2024 with help from HP Support and thought you might need that information. Also, Windows changed my sign in options, so maybe that old password just doesn’t exist now. What’s weird too is that I hadn’t had any problems until June this year when I first posted about the authorization problems. Not sure what to do next. Thanks for your direction and assistance. Have a good evening.
Thanks. I believe Guru peterweb hit the nail on its head with his post earlier. Either you need an administrator password for logging into Windows or a password was set at some point to change Norton settings. Windows 11 requires a Microsoft account to be setup or logged into a current one to setup Windows 11. I just did a setup on a brand new Acer laptop for a customer and can validate that. The only way you can bypass the MS account issue is installing from a bootable USB devices with the bootable ISO. So try your MS account password with the notice and see where that goes. If you have a password for logging into Windows use that if you have it. Please post back progress.
@SoulAsylum@peterweb I finally found a Windows password on my laptop prior to 2019 when I had to replace that laptop. Finally, I must have my administrator password because it worked as the authorization I needed!!! What’s confusing is that last June I had to reinstall Windows on the laptop using a bootable USB device, but it took until this June before there was a problem with authorization. Oh well, now I can investigate @peterweb instructions to check the system info in Norton. Thank you both for all of your support and direction!!
@peterweb Now that I have authorization, I checked the Remote Management and it is “on”. I see App Permissions as a tab, should I enter the app(s) that don’t need permission, or just leave it as is for security?
Also, now a Norton notice that I need to restart. Strange?
