Hello,
I just purchased and installed a new router (Belkin N600). One feature I love about it is that there is the capability to plug in my printer's USB port and print wirelessly. I set everything up on my laptop and it all worked great for one day - but then I shut down and restarted my computer and it no longer works. After doing research online, I think it may be a firewall setting, but I am unable to figure out how to fix it.
More details - When I first did this, again, it worked great - I was able to choose the printer, print wirelessly, etc. Then after rebooting and attempting to do the very same thing, it does not work. For example, to print a Word document, I only have the option to print to this printer "offline" (because the driver is installed and the device's USB is not plugged in). As directed by Belkin, I go to the "Networked USB Devices" section and attemp to select "Use HP Photosmart 4200 Series" but the printer name is gray and I am unable to select it as an option.
Again, I think I may have to "allow" the Belkin in the firewall but have no idea where to do this. Can anyone help? Or is there perhaps something else that needs to be done instead?
I am not a software or hardware expert, so any specific advice on how to change my settings would be appreciated. Thank you!
PS - I am running Windows 7
Hey.
Sometimes you have to create specific firewall rules for programs and and other things like printers.
1.Go to Settings
2. Find Network, its next to (My) Computer
3. Go to Smart Firewall
4. Advanced Settings and then General Rules
5.Press the button Add
6. Now choose the setting Allow and continue
7. choose the option Connections to and from other computers
Hi,
Just goto the network security map setting and check if your router and the printer are displayed in there.
Open Norton Icon from desktop->Settings->My Network->Network security Map ; Just click on the configuere button to check if the wireless connection and printer are displayed in there. If its not available, please add it under Trust control and make sure your router and printer are listed under the network security map and then try to connect to your printer wirelessly.
Regards,
Prasanna
Thank you Prasanna but I am a bit stuck. I get to "Network" (there is no "my network" option) and under "Settings" there is "Network Security Map" but there is no option to "add" anything. It just lists a communication port and gives me an option to purge or turn the welcome screen on or off.
The other solution provided above you did not work either unfortunately. I appreciate any further help that could be provided.
Hi,
I'm going to put my comments/questions/suggestions into your message, copied below, so that you can see what I'm referencing/questioning.

A router is a good thing. It adds to your protection. When we get the current problems resolved I'd recommend that you install Norton DNS on the router so that you can be further protected from possible threats.
I don't think I unserstand the line in red above. What is plugged into the USB port and how does that allow "wireless" printing?
If you have not run the HP software for your printer and installed the drivers so that it can print wirelessly it may never work. Just start the program and go through the 'add device' portion. That should solve that problem.

With the router wired to your computer NIS should become aware of it and it should appear on your network security map in the upper left corner. Neither Windows nor NIS should require firewall changes to permit the router to do its thing. This assumes that you have properly configured your router. There are settings that will turn on or off the wireless portion, as well as security configurations.

Expert isn't required but a very careful reading of the manual and the instructions on how to setup the various devices is most helpful.

Hopefully this will help you get closer to a solution. Please post back with your results and we'll continue from there. Til then
Stay well and surf safe
OK I just figured out how to do what you are talking about - the router is now listed in the trust center but is still unusable. Router is showing as "available" in the Belkin settings - it gets stuck when trying to connect, it never does. Just gets stuck with the spinning circle.
Hi,
Have you gone through the router manual and done the things necessary to configure it? If yours is like mine you will have to open your browser and type in the IP address of the router - 192.168.0.1 is the default - if memory seerves. he manual will give you the administrator password so you can get in and set things up.
Hope this helps
Yes everything is set up properly. The router works for Internet use - the printing capability does not work right now. Again, it worked ONCE then never again (after I rebooted my laptop).
I set up a D-Link router with the same USB printing feature. I had to install the driver software on the PC, and then add the printer to the devices list.
Have you tried removing the software for the router, and re installing it?
HI,
Can you please try uninstalling & reinstalling the driver for the router and the printer and then check if things work out?
regards,
Prasanna
