New Updates & restart prompt

Recently, a box popped up when I turned on my laptop telling me that Norton had updates and to click yes to restart my computer.  The reason why I question this is, the box is very non-Norton, it's a simple box, with a yes & no option.  Also, typically, all updates are done automatically, so restarting is not usually a requirement.  Plus, I have shut my computer down and restarted it, without using the box from Norton, and it still pops up when the computer reboots.  Do I have a virus, or is this something Norton issued?

Hello Beck4

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Can you please tell us a little more about your computer? What Norton product do you have installed now and what is the version number? What operating system are you using and what service pack and is it 32 or 64 bit please? Do you see any unusual listings in your task manager? Thanks.

After I posted the question, I shutdown my laptop again, now that it's back up the prompt is now gone.  So I cannot do a screenshot.  However, now my Norton icon in my taskbar now has a grey circle with a white line instead of the green check mark.  I've opened Norton and it shows all is updated and fine.  I'm not sure what you mean by extra item in the registry?

Sorry, I mean task manager!  And I'm on an HP Pavillion laptop 64 bit

Hi Beck4,

Try rebooting the machine again to see if you get the green checkmark back on the system tray icon.

Hello

There have been a few threads now about this grey circle with the slash in it....

The box is back this morning, for some reason the screenshot will not load, I used the snipping tool to capture it, it's in my pictures, but I cannot get it to attach.  It just seems to plain and simple for it to be real from Norton.  Any ideas?  The Norton icon in the taskbar is back to the green circle with the check mark.  But why, after restarting my computer & shutting it down several times since this prompt showed up, does it keep showing up.  I have yet to actually use the box to restart, because I don't trust it, I just keep closing it!

Next time when you receive this alert, open task manager (right-click on taskbar and then click TasK Manager), go to the Processes tab, and see whether you have a process by the name NUA.exe.

Nope, nothing by that name in the task manager...is that good or bad?    And the pop up box is back.

Since I can't get the screen shot to work...this is what is 'looks' like (pretend it's in a rectangle box):

Norton Safety Minder

Norton Safety Minder has updates for this computer.  A restart is needed to install

the updates.

Click "Yes" to install updates and restart this computer or "No" to update later.

Do you want to restart now?

                                                                                  Yes                           No

It is seriously that plain...Norton prompts are usually colorful and the buttons are different colors, this is just black & white.

Thanks.

Thank you, I followed those steps to posting a screenshot and it didn't work.

I do have Norton Online Family, but it's not active on this computer, since the kids never use it.

Still baffled!!

Hello Beck4

If you would like to unistall Norton Online Family, you can follow the instructions in this kb. That should stop the reminders to update your program.

Thanks.

Okay, so the box is safe??  Is that what I'm understanding?  I should just click the yes button and move on?  I know that my Norton has changed in appearances and that's its now 5.0.  I never use the online family on this computer, just to get notices and track the kids on theirs.  I just want the prompt to go away!!  :smileytongue:

Hello Beck4

I am now seeing a few other people complaining about this popup also. Let's see what the other threads are saying. I may have to go thru my other channels to find out what is happening. Thanks.

Awesome, Thank you!!  It will be interesting to see what this is exactly!!
