New Version - Slow UI, also left old version installed

Issue abstract: The GUI lags noticeably. Previous version not removed by automatic update, so both were running concurrently initially.

Detailed description: Pressing a button, and there’s a very noticeable lag for the GUI to update. I right-click the system tray icon, it takes literally 4 seconds until the menu appears (no other system tray icon has this issue, not even Steam which has a custom context menu!). I click “My Norton”, and it takes 7 seconds to appear.
Dragging the main window around, it takes a full second between where it appears. It feels like someone forgot to enable hardware rendering (but my CPU should be fast enough to handle even software rendering).
I have my Smart Firewall configured to “Ask”; the ask window first appears as some black boxes, and takes a noticeable time to render in (The Details dropdown at its bottom also takes more time than it should to drop down).
I had the main window open in the Send Feedback dialog, and the Smart Firewall ask dialog window came up, and the two windows were basically slowly z-fighting for dominance. One appeared over the other, then the other appeared over that, and so on, about once a second. Also, this Smart Firewall ask dialog didn’t size itself correctly, so the buttons were not clickable.

Also, the previous version of Norton was left installed alongside the new one. I restarted my computer to make sure it didn’t require a restart (nothing suggested it would, but that’s a first line of defense); two Norton icons were in my system tray. I used the norton remover tool, and reinstalled the new version. The report regarding slow UI is all from after reinstalling.

This new version should not have been deployed to customers, QA testers should have already noticed all of this.

Product & version number: Norton 360, 24.10.9535 (build 24.10.9535.880)

OS details: Windows 11 Pro Version 10.0.22631 Build 22631

Hardware details:
Processor: Intel Core i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
GPU: Nvidia 3080
Memory: 32GB Ram

I am still on Windows 10, but I have the same issue with both the old and the new Norton icon showing up in the tray, the whole computer is somewhat sluggish, and the Task Manager reports a substantial CPU load for the Windows Defender Firewall/Base Filtering Engine (?). I always thought the Norton Firewall replaces the Windows Firewall…

Thank you, bjm! In my situation, where version 22 and 24 currently appear to be co-installed, would you expect that it should be possible to selectively remove one of them using one of these tools and to leave the other version functional/intact?

@jditte The removers bjm posted will remove both. We suggest removal of BOTH. One done and restarted, manually locate ALL folders related to Norton / Avast and remove those. Reboot. Reinstall your product from the download in your Norton account. That should ensure you get a clean install. Make sure you manually run live updates on Norton when you get it installed and have rebooted at least once.

Thank you. Things are looking much better now after removing both versions and a fresh install via downloading the current installer from my Norton account (other than a message having popped up that my version of Norton is incompatible with Windows 10, which, I hope, is just a joke…).

BTW, removing just version 22 when 22 and 24 are installed in parallel seems impossible (at least it did not work for me). I could not remove it through “Programs and Features”, and running the old Norton removal tool (NRnR) ended up removing version 24.

Oh!?..my info was that the old NRnR tool does not support v24.
Maybe, the old NRnR has been update to support v24?

More likely than not, version 24.xx never was fully nor correctly installed. The old R&R tool could have been looking at what it determined as remnants of the older version and just removed it. Glad things worked out as well.

as always, your mileage may vary

Well, interestingly, the first time I ran NRnR, it showed my a different GUI. It must have run something else that was installed with version 24. This is when version 24 was uninstalled. After rebooting, I still had a non-functioning (“your trial has expired”) version 22 left. So I ran NRnR again. This time it showed me the other GUI and actually removed the remaining part of version 22.

I still keep getting these popups that my current version of Norton (I have 24.10.9535 installed, the latest) is incompatible with Windows 10 (?). It seems to be running fine though and, according to Norton’s website, version 24 should be compatible with Windows 10…

As the OP pointed out, app windows don’t scale properly with the new UI. Firewall alerts, for example, are difficult to read and navigate when you have Windows 11 configured to use a larger default text size.

My workaround has been to change Settings > Accessibility > Text Size to 100%. Unfortunately, this is leading to some eye strain, but I guess I’m stuck with this until Norton fixes the problem.

Now, when I run NRnR tool https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v60392881 … or … Norton Remover https://www.norton.com/nortonremover

It drives me crazy when the customer has to compensate for updates that simply don’t complete. I had the same issue. New version 24.12 with new interface etc… Go through the process. After its done. Both the old version and new version are now installed. The new version is working. The old version is working. The hilarious thing is the new version said the VPN could not be activated because another VPN was active (the old version). I just don’t have time to deal with something that simply should work correctly. I shut down the VPN in the old version and then deleted the old ICON on the desktop. The remnants of the old version are still there. I am NOT going to remove everything and reinstall. I am not a neophyte. I have 42 years of professional IT experience. I can NOT compensate for simply dumb upgrades on the part of the vendor. I have better things to do. I hate this.
