Newbie needs help with error message

I keep getting the following error message from Windows: ”Symantec Error Reporting Has Stopped Working”… “A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.” Of course no notification ever appears.

If I look at Norton 360 Security History Advanced Details it will list a medium threat (Unauthorized access blocked [Open Process Token]). The date and time will be when the Windows error box popped up. Interestingly, tonight I am getting this message every 30 minutes. That may or may not be unusual as I have never taken note of this kind of detail.

The N360 history advanced details read as follows…

Actor: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\WRTPROC.EXE

Actor PID: 2536

Target: C:\Program Files\Norton 360\Engine\5.1.0.29\SymErr.exe

Target PID: 2092

Etc, etc

Subsequent episodes will have the same details but the PIDs will be of different value.

I’ve used this N360 for a couple months having upgraded from NIS. As I recall, I was getting the same message previously with NIS. Anyway, this is getting annoying and I have no idea where to start. Help please-please help.

System: Dell inspiron 1520 (Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.20 GHz) running Vista Home Premium

Hello 8bobcat8

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum.

Have you installed the service packs for Vista? What was the previous security program installed and how was it removed? Did you use the removal tool from the other company in addtion to using the control panel method. When changing to N360 from NIS, you also will have to use the control panel method and then the Norton removal tool.

From this thread, I see that one of the volunteers for Symantec has given the fix for this problem. Here is the link to that thread.

Here is the kb that  should be used to fix that problem taken from the above article.

floplot,

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

Before posting, I actually did a search on here to try and find a fix but I had no luck so thanks for the words of wisdom.

My Vista is on automatic update and is totally current. When I updated to N360 (from NIS), I had trouble with the download/install so I ended up calling Customer Service. I don't recall that I ever had anything but NIS on this computer. Is there a chance something got left behind from the Customer Service encounter?

Anyway, I will try the fix and update this thread.

BTW, I'm having a heck of a time with "reCAPTCHA". It takes several tries to get it to work. I'm not dyslectic that I know of.

UPDATE: After dozens of tries on recaptcha, I left out the space between the words... and it worked... what's up with that??
