The green checkmark shows that the file has been backup up. The arrows show that it's set to be included in the next backup, those should change to checkmarks after the next backup. There is also another icon if the file is excluded from the backup but I can't remember what it looks like.
If you don't like those overlays you can disable it under "settings". But initially they give you a good idea of whats being backed up and if you see certain file types not getting backed up it gives you an idea of what needs to be added.

Gee Dave, your explanation sounds good, but it does not match the behavior I'm seeing. (please see attached)
I'm earning $4/hr on unemployment, and this copy of Norton 360 Premier cost me 25 hours of work, the equivalent of 1 weeks food bill, and I can't pay my taxes or insurance. Documenting this problem amounts to 2 hours of the time I could be using looking for work.
Perhaps we can get some insight on this evidence from a Norton representative.
BTW, this "feature" doesn't seem to apply to my .java files, although I see them listed in the Backup History
Back when I was a Fortune 500 software developer, quality was important. Can I get a refund/credit?
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. (I apologize for the sarcastic tone.)

Hi John_
Your images are not visible yet, but perhaps this KB article will be useful to you:
Hello John,
Are you expecting a tick mark (green symbol ) since the file shows a last backed up time?
Your snapshot shows the last backup time and the blue icon with arrows. This means, this particular file has been modified after the backup was taken. In the next backup session, this file (with changes) will be backed up and the icon should turn green.
Is this what you were looking for ?
