The newest version of NIS just installed itself recently. Seems to be running fine, but tonight it told me I should optimize my boot drive. My boot drive is an SSD and should never be optimized, but when I went into the settings Insight Optimization was on by default (and had run at least once!), as was the Idle Time Optimizer.
Just before posting this I'd done some searching, and Norton says that Windows 8.1 has some funky feature for optimizing SSDs. I'm assuming that by these default settings Norton is trying to take advantage of that, but if so it should be smart enough to detect Windows 7 and default these things to OFF.
And no, I have no plans to "upgrade" to Windows 8.1 or 10 in the near future. Windows 8 has no appeal for me, and I won't even consider Windows 10 until after the first Service Pack is out, and I figure out what all the DLC is going to cost, and MS changes their minds on some things (automatic updates I can't control? Seriously?)
So anyone that boots Windows 7 from SSD and has had their NIS updated needs to go into settings and turn off all the automatic/background automation (BTW, I like how the Background Tasks "configure" link doesn't really let you configure anything, just shows status and lets you click "run now" ... great design ...). Hopefully it hadn't run enough before I caught it to do any damage. Now where did I put my backup software ...
