NIS 08-Will this give me full protection alone?

You shouldn't need any additional software.  NIS2008 is pretty powerful. You've virus defs are updated daily, you'll have a great personal firewall, intrusion protection, phishing protection, crimeware protection, and yes spyware protection too. Symantec has added some nice improvements since '06. You have Identity Safe that blocks online identity theft, keeping passwords and personal data secure. Makes banking online safe and easy.....

What else you loooking for??:smileywink:

Thanks so much, donahu1, for the quick reply. Do I need to uninstall that SpySweeper with 'Add and Remove Programs' in order to get a clean install of NIS? I am weary of all the arguments between the two but not computer-savy enough to know the best way to rid myself of the extra program without wrecking havoc within my computer.

Yes I would do that. You no longer need spysweeper… Enjoy. It is truly a great program.

Dixieharper,

Donahu1 sums up NIS 2008 pretty well.  IMHO, it's the best single, all-around PC security program on the market today.

However, when it comes to spyware, I don't know of any single product that does a comprehensive job.  So I also use Norton AntiBot, which is fully compatible with NIS, and then augment the spyware protection with two freely downloadable programs: Ad-aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy.  These two I keep updated and run periodically only in manual scan mode.  The trick here is to configure them so as not to allow either of them to run automatically or to be resident in memory where they can conflict with the Norton programs.  Their manual scans don't conflict with the running programs, and each sometimes catches something the others miss.

I haven't used Spysweeper, so I don't know if it also will work compatibly when used only as a manual scanner, but, before you uninstall it, you might want to try to reconfigure it so that it will not run automatically and then run a manual scan to see if it behaves itself.

SpySweeper is compatble if you use it on demand. That's the way I use it.

Besides Norton360 I use Spysweeper and SuperAntispyware , both on demand. Just for a second opinion.

Norton 360 or Internet Security will do the job. Both programs ensure complete protection, and N360 offers backup and PC-tuneup as additional features.

Pesonally, I don't recommend using any kind of additional security software both with NIS/NAV/N360, not just to prevent conflicts, but to ensure optimal performance while using the computer.

I would just like to confirm what the previous poster said.

It is not a good idea to have more than one system security software active at the same time.

This advice was given to me by a supervisor at the Symantec technical help department.

Thanks everyone, for your input. Still a newbie and learning as I go. I've used NIS 06 and SpySweeper together for several years and yes they make terrible neighbors. Managed to put up with their bickering but it was a hassle. I didn't know SpySweeper could be set up to run on demand. I just upgraded to NIS 08 but have not added any other anti-malware yet. Will check out the suggested programs maybe one that focuses on malious behavior rather than signature. NIS has protected me well but would feel a lot better if I had a back-up, after all there are a lot of 'Nasties" out there.

Contrary to some of the posts here, you should never-ever rely on just one program to provide security. At the moment, I am using NIS 2008 along with Prevx 2.0 which is active. They work seemlessly with no conflicts. The Prevx products have good heuristics (detection without signatures) as well as relying on the experience of their users.

You can also try Prevx CSI and scan your computer every so often with it not being resident. You might also try Dr. Web Cure-It to scan your computer and make certain Norton has not missed anything.
