NIS 20.4.0.40 LOST after Upgrade

I have an HP 110-014 desktop computer that came with Windows 8 home.   I upgraded Windows 8 to 8.1 then to 8.1 Enterprise edition.   Unfortunately, I lost NIS 20.4.0.40 on my computer.   Somehow, some way, the upgrade to 8.1 E, caused NIS to disappear.   I couldn't find it at all.   I searched in the APP section, I searched everywhere.   I tried the Recovery Manager method to locate and reinstall NIS.   That didn't work either.

Just to clarify, during the upgrade from Windows 8----8.1-----8.1 Enterprise, I never formatted the drive.  It was ONLY upgrade.   So, nothing should have been lost.

I get on the blower with HP tech support. I explain the situation to him and he takes control of my computer.  He can't find NIS 20.4.0.40 either.   So, he goes and downloads NIS 2014 trial program.   Now, I wasted about a half hour on the CHAT line with this guy only to discover that he didn't do anything that I couldn't figure out myself.

At this point, I have NIS 2014 installed on this computer with a 30 day trial subscription.   That is great but it doesn't answer my original question.   WHY DID NIS 20.4.0.40 DISAPPEAR?
