I am helping a friend who is running NIS 2006 on a Windows XP Home Edition PC. His settings (Virus definitions, etc.) are up to date. He has been unable to open any attachments (mainly Word 2003 and Excel 2003 documents) sent as attachments through AOL 9.0 VR email clent. Before two weeks ago he was able to open any attachment. The only change to his computer was Comcast setting up a broadband connection on his PC. Network connections appear normal (I repair PCs and have CompTIA certification).
Could NIS have changed email settings which will not allow attachments to be opened?

Please check to see what MS patches / updates were installed recently. Has AOL changed the email client at all? If they (your friend)save the files to their hard drive first, can they open the files without a problem then or does Windows say not authorized for this action?

Hello dbrisedine,
After chatting with AOL tech support online several times yesterday, AOL recommended that I run a quick restore from Windows which puts AOL back to default conditions. But after the quick restore, his ability to sign on through his broadband connection disappeared and attempted to dial in on a non existent phone line. He lost his ability to access the internet.
I will check for MS updates for Office and Windows even though there were NO notices through Windows for any updates. Finally, any attempts to download files is met with a download box that does not start downloading. The download box just sits without beginning the download.
Thank you. I’ll recommenf my friend to upgrade NIS to 2009 and run the upgrade myself.
