Hi, I've been running OS windows 2000 SP4 and been protected with NIS 2006 for a long time. My subscription is still OK. Suddenly I started getting "LU1803: LiveUpdate failed while getting your updates" error messages. When attempting for re-installing LiveUpdate via Symantec Automatic tool online the site claims that I'm not logged in as administrator and that's it... I have bought my PC as secondhand and never had to log in as Administrator and frankly I don't know what the password is. When I attempted to change/create admin password via Control Panel my system claims that I'm guessing wrong.
How can I go about this, because my Virus Definitions don't update anymore? Please help!!!
I'll tell you this only because if you have physical access to the system and your using an account with administrator privilidges I'll assume it's your system. If you don't have an administrative account, I'll have to assume your some kid up to no good. LOL
I happen to be sitting next to windows 2000 sp4 system.
From any account that is a group of the administrator go to:
My computer> Control panel> Administrative tools> Computer management.
On the left go to "local users and groups" and then "users"
Double click on Administrator, remove the check from the box if present "user cannot change password"
Click apply and OK
Right click on Administrator and select "set password".
Now you don't need the old password, enter a new one or leave both boxes blank.
If it confirms the password has been changed then it worked.
Thanks TomV. There are few files available on the link you provided. Which one is suitable for my system and where on my PC I should save it to? Also, do I have to do it this way from now on?
Hi Dave, ...I was born in 1958, soo little bit slow with my PC, which I bought about 3 years ago from an engineering company upgrading its network. I followed everything as you advised and left blank password fields and got confirmation of password change.
received message "You must run this tool as an Administrator. Please right click the Internet Explorer shortcut, and then click Run as administrator. If you receive this same message, please log in to an account that has Administrator rights and re-run this action."
However, I don't get an option on IE shorcut for running as administrator...

My System Properties is: x86 Family 6
Please click the file "20100412-003-x86.exe" and download the latest definitions.
attempting to delete and reinstall LiveUpdate I have received the same message from Autofix Tool, that I'm not logged in as administrator:
"You must run this tool as an Administrator. Please right click the Internet Explorer shortcut, and then click Run as administrator. If you receive this same message, please log in to an account that has Administrator rights and re-run this action."
My IE shortcut (right Click) doesn't have option saying "Run as Administrator".
as I'm able to obtain Virus Definitions update manually only, it is going to be a real hassle..., sorry about bother!
Sorry to know about the problem. The clean up tool requires administrator privileges to run. I doubt if you will be able to fix this problem unless you figure out the Administrator password or log in as an administrator. Running the Intelligent Updater is an interim workaround to keep your PC protected.
