When I booted up XP, the Norton Internet Security icon in the sys tray had a red x on it. Also the Norton Protection Center icon in the sys tray had a red x on it. Both icons indicated something serious wrong. I opened NIS 2007 and apparently the Norton product was not active/activated.
I could not understand this. Yesterday everything was fine, I got no warning that the product would become useless today.
To fix the problem, it said that I had to go online and activate the product. "Dear Norton, there is no chance in Hell that I'll go online unprotected to activate the protection. I can not take that risk. You are installed on this PC to protect it, and you failed."
Unable to accept this, I decided to give NIS one more chance. I logged off XP and logged in again. This time, the Norton Internet Security icon in the sys tray did not have a red "x" on it. But the Norton Protection Center icon did still have a red x on it.
I opened up NIS, it did still say that the product was not activated and that I had to go online in order to activate it. The phising protection was inactive, I noticed that when I opened IE. But the firewall was probably active because the main NIS icon in the sys tray was not red this time (after the second XP login).
A few minutes later - and I had still not connected to the internet - NIS decided that everything was OK and it began to work as normal. I got access to the NIS settings. It worked. I did not have to activate the product today.
It works at the moment, but I am still concerned. It is difficult to trust a product that behaves this way. I reinstalled NIS 2007 about a week ago so please think twice before you suggest reinstalling it. Some days ago I updated to LU 3.5.
As several posters have already suggested in your other thread, and as mdturner has also suggested, I strongly recommend that you upgrade to NIS 2010 after upgrading your XP OS as well.
I saw another thread last night with a similar problem. I am wondering if the update center or something might have been having a problem. This other poster had like 100 + days and it said subscription had run out when it hadn't. Also all features wouldn't work. Seems odd that there would be like at least 2 cases where this happened in a few hours time. Maybe it's a problem on Symantec end this time.

Interesting information there. But my NIS did not clearly say that the subscription had expired, it just said that it was inactive or not activated.
I don't know if all protection was taken down in my case, but it almost looks like there is no protection whatsoever when the icons are red and I can not view the settings tab in NIS. This makes me a little bit upset and angry. It feels like I'm no longer in control of my own PC, the control belongs to Symantec.
NIS started to work again before I connected to internet.
Yes, your problem of it suddenly being deactivated (as floplot stated) is the exact problem I had last night. Mine said there was a problem with the subscription and that I had to activate it again, which I finally got it activated but the features still didn't work after it said my subscirption was fine. Still had the red x on the icon, and all features were red.
I haven't yet been on that computer today but I will be on this evening to try and sort out the issue. It seems an almost strange coincidence for a few people to report a similar problem on different platforms of NIS (mine is 2008, another person who reported a similar problem has 2010).
But at least if it is something that has happened to sevearl people, not just one, then we're not alone.
