The mosty easy way how it should be working is indeed uninstalling v2007 --> reboot --> run a reg cleaner- -> install the latest version.
It should work with firefox indeed
pamifo,
Stu's suggestions are always clear, concise and address the problem at hand.
In searching the Norton website, I found a page that is designed to Download from the Symantec Store using Firefox and Opera.
I cannot vouch if this page will work for you as I have not used it, but it may be a good resource for you once you have followed Stu's advice. It is located here.
Best Wishes.
If that file that you actually downloaded was relatively small it sounds like all you got is the Download Manager stub and that for some reason -- Phil D may have the explanation -- the Download Manager could not connect back to the server.
I just checked my Internet Downloads folder and the NIS 2008 15.50 file was 68MB -- is the file you have similar to that or much much smaller?
In any case I'd be inclined to delete what you have downloaded and start again, either using Internet Explorer for the download or using the link to the instructions in the message from Phil D.
In any case keep in touch here since there is plenty of help and if all else fails there are Norton Staffers -- names in red!
huwyngr,
The file that I saved to my desktop is just a "setup" file of 50 or so KBs. When I open this file, the Symantec Download Manager opens with status 0 of 68 MB dowloaded. After a few seconds, I receive the "Communication Error" message in the Symantec Download Manager window. Firefox is my default browser, Windows Firewall is off, and Norton 2007 is uninstalled.
For reasons that I do not know, Internet Explorer does not work on my computer (I've tried several versions). The PC used only dial up thru Earthlink for the first 3 years of its 4 year life. When I switched to high speed internet, IE would ALWAYS return "Page Cannot Be Displayed". Because Firefox worked fine, I never bothered to fix the issue with IE.
I don't want to dwell to much on the IE problem. Norton 2007 worked fine and the PC is great in every other way. Thanks for your suggestions.
I suggest you turn off the firewall of NIS 2007 first. Then download the 2008 version from the following link.
Don't give up without trying the link in Phil D's message which gives instructions for using Firefox to download.
There are enough people around using Firefox that it must be possible! Is your FIrefox the latest version 3 or an earlier one?
Note what is said about turning off all firewalls -- I don't know how the download manager works since I don't think I've ever run into it!
